Hello Group,
I have received my plans, the workshop is ready. Zodiac 601XL #6274
production will commence as soon as I procure the materials. It's very
exciting, as I am sick of polishing my ass in front of this computer. I
think I must have read the whole Internet by now. Television does
nothing for me anymore.
Here's what I've found on Al pricing so far, for archival purposes for
future scratch-builders:
6061-T6 .025 48"x144"
--------------------------------
Wicks - $87.15 on the web plus UPS shipping (~$18 I'm guessing)
Aircraft Spruce - $77.50 on the web plus UPS shipping (~$18 I'm
guessing) plus a $4 boxing charge
SpeedyMetals (local - like MetalMart) - sold per pound (at) $5.93 - so
about $102.63 per their quote, but no shipping
Yarde -- $57.20 per sheet - plus a skid fee of $75 plus freight (~$200)
for the order
I need 13 sheets of this. The price difference between the local-yokels
at SpeedyMetals and Yarde is nearly $600.00!
I don't know if you can get a certificate of quality from Yarde, and
doubt the SpeedyMetals quote came with that.
Caveat emptor! Buyer beware! If any of you are building from plans, IT
PAYS TO SHOP AROUND FOR YOUR MATERIALS!!!
And, like others here have warned, don't tell 'em what it's for. People
hear "airplane" and you are instantly a Rockefeller. Price goes up 50%.
Nate Erb
601XL from plans / Corvair power (well maybe, now with the crank issues
and the 701/Warp Drive AC mentioned today)
Plans looked at, workbench half ready. Planned completion 2053.

I got almost all my material from the same source, Jim Dankovich. He procured it from Yarde and decided to sell it to me before he broke the bands. I picked it up a couple of weeks ago and have most of the rudder parts made. The price from the folks at Yarde seemed about the lowest, and their material, which Iv'e handled every sheet while loading into the rack, looks to be of good quality. Forms and bends just like 6061 T6 which is what the mill marks say.

I still recommend Copper & Brass Sales, check the archives, everything I've
bought from them for several years has been quoted at very good prices with
freight paid. Of course, I live in Las Vegas, NV, I don't know how they
handle more rural areas but they have distribution centers all over the
country. Metals are a volume business, the more you buy the cheaper it gets
per lb. When I need 3 sheets, I always ask for quotes on 3 sheets, 6
sheets, 10 sheets and 20 sheets to see where the real price breaks are.
Also, at Copper & Brass Sales, they quote on the total weight of a shipment
of a like material, i.e. all 6061T6, without regard for the various sheet
thicknesses.
Randy L. Thwing, do not archive

Hmm, interesting. I have the rest of Jim's project: the XL and a roll of
aluminum.
Jim sometimes reads this list - Hi Jim!
