Many thanks, Richard. It sounds easy enough to do. I am seeing the Rotax
agent next week anyway, and he can show me what to do. I don't see any
reference to this in the maintenance manual, though.

Best regards Karl

SERVICE BULLETIN For 912 & 914 Engines
Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2006 20:20:05 +0100

Karl.

My understanding is:-

1). Click on the relevant bulletin below or cut and paste the URL into
internet explorer, ASB-912-051 or ASB-914-034 (the UL are for
ultralights), This will load the full bulletin from Rotax provided you
are on line.
2). Check if the bulletin is relevant for your engine. (my engine number
is before that listed in the 912 section). If your engine is not one
listed then ignore the bulletin. If it is, then
3). Unscrew the magnetic plug with a torx 40 driver and check for
particles. If there are a lot of bits stuck to the plug, as in the
picture, then the engine has to be checked before being used again.

I personally check the plug at every oil change and have found virtually
no particles.

Hope this helps.

Karl,

It is covered in the maintenance manual section 12.3.11 (Page 96).
There appears to be nothing new in the service bulletin.

I think the reason for all the fuss is that some owners do not notice it
is a torx bolt and try and remove it with an Allen key (I have seen this
done). The plug is also in very tight as it comes from the factory so
the likelihood of damaging it are high.

Once you have got it out for the first time the head is drilled for lock
wire so lock it when you put it back.

Ian
Where is this plug. Is it the one we remove at the bottom of the oil tank to
drain the oil ?

Alan.

The plug is not the one at the bottom of the tank. From memory, it is
on the port side of the engine, right at the front and just below the
gearbox. It has a fairly large head, coloured gold (cad plated?) and
is, I think, the only Torx head bolt in that area. You don't need to
drain the oil to check it but as Ian says, wire lock it after refitting.

Alan,
Mine is aluminium coloured (not gold anodised); perhaps they come in
different shades. Richard is right, it is on the port side at the front
near to the oil filter. 1/2" dia flat disc about 3/32" thick with the 40
torx recess in the centre. I think your engine is too old for the ASB to
apply.
Regards,
William

Your question "Where is this plug".

The plug is on the port side of the gearbox (centre of attached picture)
and mine is wire locked.

Ian,
You may want to consider placing a large hose clamp around your oil
filter. Place the screw of the clamp to the front. The run your locking
wire from the plug to the screw on the clamp. This will safety wire the
filter as well. 2 birds with one stone as they say.

Ok, now that we know WHERE it is, what are we supposed to do with it?
