I need a complete set of gill shutters for my CJ. My current set has had
enough replacements of random origin that it's starting to look like it has
gold teeth. I just want to take all of the old ones out and put matching
new ones in. Anybody got some for sale?

Thanks,
Jon

Jon,
Don't have any shutters lying around but do where you can get an ebonics
dentist for those gold teeth!

Jon,
The only options available to arrive at a completely overhauled or
completely new shutter system it to move to a titanium iris type gill system
which will cost you about 2200.00 or wait another 60 days or so until spare
shutters get in. I have the cut out shutters, new center rings and pivot
rods and screws at this time but still not have the -100 shutters.

Hang in there.

Always Yakin,
Doug Sapp

Both 285 and M14 shutters if properly adjusted will last for many years of
normal flying. The problem is that just replacing a worn shutter which has
a worn out wobbler (the arm at the bottom) is only half the problem. If the
center rings are worn, or the pivot bolt is worn, or the center screws are
worn, they will cause the early demise of your new shutter gills. Also,
care should be taken to be sure that the gill cannot move up and down, it
should be just loose enough to allow it to open and close easily. Vibration
is the killer here so check every connection to make sure that "rattle" is
at a minimum.

Composites are wonderful, and I must admit that I don't have a full grasp of
what the per unit cost of the shutters would be but I seriously doubt that
this method of construction would be effective in solving the wear problem.
It's usually not the vane portion of the shutter that goes south, it's all
the points where you have metal against metal contact. I really can't see
how composites would help this situation. The wobbler is made up of two
pieces of steel which are silver soldered together. A redesigned wobblers
with a removable wear insert would solve this problem, but again the cost
per unit might be a consideration.
