Hi to all on the list:

I have been following the list for about a year. During this time I have
picked up a lot of help from all the postings. Thought it was about time I
"officially" joined the group.

I am building the CH-701 from a kit. I started with the tail in August of
last year. Currently I am building the right wing. The Fuselage, Tail, and
Controls are in place. It is setting on it's wheels and I mounted the
engine just last week. Incidentally, I choose to go with the Jabiru 2200 as
well as their Firewall Forward Kit. I choose the Jabiru for several
reasons. I liked the idea of air cooling rather than liquid. I like the
lower RPM's and not having a gear box between the prop and engine. I also
like the 2000 Hour TBO figure. Also the overall cost was a bit lower than
the Rotax setup. Last spring and summer I built my hanger/workshop here at
my home. I have the first cut made on a 550 foot runway, 24/6 which works
well with the winds in this area. I think, in the past two years, I have
collected or seen every picture there is about building the 701. I am
concerned about getting used to the central "Y" stick. Getting used to a
swap of my yoke and throttle hands does give me some concern. Maybe someone
out there can set me at ease on this one. Would consider dual sticks if I
could find something that looked really good. I know there are a couple out
there that have been successful, but so far I have not seen anything I want
to do. Also my FWF kit did not come with a carb heater system. It is shown
as part of the 601 FWF kit but did not come with the 701 kit that I
purchased. Incidentally, all the components that I got were market for the
601 so I really don't understand why no carb heat stuff was included. So
anyway, am looking for a great design for carb heat that may be out there.
I have emailed several of the list participants off the list and gotten some
great ideas from their comments and construction pictures.
If you would like to see my hanger project as well as the 701 project you
can see both at:
http://www.mykitairplane.com I look forward to chatting with you all on
the list.

George, Welcome to the group as a poster. Lots of good stuff here.
ALL my previous airplanes (RV, Glasair, 180, Pacer, Seabee, Lake)have been flown with the left hand and throttle in the right EXCEPT my current one which is a Champ, after a hundred hours I'm getting comfortable with it but my 701 will have a version of the Tailwinds stick, basically an extension of the Y that comes over the right leg and down in the center, might make it removable. I even thought of flying from the right seat which is still an option. I'm left handed so maybe that's why I still have trouble flying with the "wrong" hand.

Welcome George,

When I learned to fly, back in the dyas of the dinosaurs, I flew with my left hand on the C-150 yoke and my right on the throttle. Later, when I built my first plane (an ultralight) I switched to right hand on stick, left hand on throttle. When I finish my 601XL (dual sticks and single center throttle), I will switch back to left hand on stick, right hand on throttle. So far I have had no problems or insecurities about these transitions (I'm not ambidextrous or anything like that) so I don't see why you should lose any sleep over it.

PS: I have an Excalibur flying friend near Blanchard, MI. Are you anywhere near there?

George,

Welcome officially to the list. It looks like you are progressing well on your plane. I have built a similar hanger (same color) and have a 1300 ft strip on my property. I have a 701 with a 912S engine. I recommend that with a 550 ft strip that you do your flight testing a local airport until you get used to the plane. I came from flying high performance planes and it took a while to get used to the slow flying and the attitudes of the 701. The 550 ft is doable without obstructions but doesn't leave any wiggle room. If you are going to paint your plane I would recommend doing it before doing the final assembly and test flying. I did and don't regret it.

Best of luck and welcome

George

I forgot to mention that it did not take long to get used to the Y stick or the opposite hand for stick and throttle. When on longer flights I rest my wrist in between the Y while flying.

Hi George:
I too am building a 701, I have completed the tail group and am about 75% done on the right wing. Regarding your question on the yoke. I flew the factory 701 in February this year when I went to the rudder workshop. The yoke had a very natural feel to it. If you can visit the factory and take a test flight I think you will be impressed with how well the 701 reacts.
