Bill and Sara DeRouchey had their newly painted RV-10 (at) Copperstate as
well, His paint scheme is a derivative of Van's 410 (only better) and
looks Terrific! But that's not the story. _Bill designed, built,
programmed and installed HIS OWN EFIS ! along with his own Air Data
Computer! _I had the pleasure of having him walk me through it in his
cockpit and it is AMAZING! Hopefully Bill will come up on the list and
respond, and add to the description. Bill, if you have any pics and are
ready to share them with the group please do so, what you've built is
impressive and deserves to be seen by the -10 builder community !

But we will all understand if he's trying to do something commercial with it
and wants it somewhat under exposed.

What would be great is give you a list of the hardware needed to build
the system and then supply the software to run it. 99% of the hardware
for EFIS systems is available on the market, the software to tie it
all together is a little more difficult for most of us to master....

Thank You Deems for the kind words.

About April 2003 I had decided on two things: I was going to build an RV-10 and there would be no vacuum system on-board. Starting with a clean sheet of paper, this path led me to a completely integrated, low cost IFR panel with a good backup plan and tremendous functionality.

After two cross-countrys with prototype components we are down to one bug and one very big feature to add: XM Weather! During our flights, Sara and I, looked over the graphic design many times and decided it was ready for prime time. From now until the end of the year I will be productizing the hardware, creating wiring diagrams and installing the system in another RV-10. First quarter 2007 I will emerge under the name WTD Aviation Technology. We already have a web site but there is very little there - the panel shown is for Sport Aviation and we are now flying with a Cross Country rendering. I will stay with a product directed toward the RV-10 due to the integration content until its well on its way then expand to other experimental aircraft.

A few details:
Pilot scan largely eliminated. All primary flight, engine, and warning information
contained within a single display. Provides more time for pilot to manage flight.
Single 10.4" sun light rated LCD industrial display
1GB, 256MB display computer with no spinning media
All operating system and application contained on one CF card for easy update
Very accurate air data computer that also picks up inputs from the RV-10
Crossbow gyro: They are on track with a new model for January that I will Beta.
System interfaces beautifully with a Garmin 430 or 530.
IFR mission: The ILS cross hairs are designed to give the feel of a jet fighter going
after a target.
Integration into the RV-10: The display computer knows fuel levels, flap position,
door sensors, and stall warning. It provides speed adjusted trim sensitivity.
Less wiring than a VFR panel, less weight, less heat, less cutting of the support
structure.
With a Garmin 430 & 330 the panel in N939SB has 2.5 levels of backup, traffic,
terrain, and soon weather. And I had panel space left over for a map box.
Very reliable: this is a big subject that requires its own forum. The old thought that
you need two of everything falls apart as you increase MTBF (measurable
reliability). You can increase reliability and reduce cost by approaching the panel
with a good system design.

I have been presenting my design concepts to my local EAA 119 for two years in various forms beginning with education to acutal demonstrations. The only negative comment has been from commercial pilots that are not comfortable unless every inch on the panel is covered with knobs or displays. It just looks too simple to support all the features.

Just now Sara and I are still traveling after Copperstate. When I return I will create a new subject called "Glass Panels" and provide pictures, more on design goals, and expected costs of a panel using my components.

Just remember that MTBF means Mean Time Between Failures. A valuable statistical number, but for every unit which goes beyond the Mean there is another which goes the same amount less. Which is yours going to be? I still like redundancy!
