Bevan, Larry,
Mr. Harmon Lange makes the gear legs for Van's. If you call him and explain to him what you want to do he can make the gear legs for you with the axle 1 " longer. Also Robbie Grove at Grove Aircraft has a great wheel and brake package for the 6" wheels with the 1.25" diameter axles.

Grove Aircraft 619-562-1268
I don't know where you can get a larger nose wheel fork. I am looking for a larger tail wheel fork so that I can use a pneumatic wheel and tire combination along the lines of a "Scott" tail wheel.

And then the question would be...
With longer axles, would Van's standard wheel pants fit when you take your 6s off and you're using your 5s?

Dan,
Of course not. Or probably not, I just assumed no, I have not checked into it. Once you take this path you initiate the cascade effect where one change causes many changes. Mission profiles dictate changes and where I intend to operate this aircraft, larger tires and possibly skiis will benifit from the longer axle. Many of the airports in Alaska are gravel and I use that term loosely, rocks over 2" in diameter shouldn't be called gravel, or the surface of the runway is very soft and the additional flotation of the larger tire size will be safer for operations.
I agree with any statements that this will cause additional drag and expense and time. I also agree the RV-9 is not meant to be a "Bush" plane but I think it may prove to be very good in this environment.
Respectfully,
Mike

Dan,
Many thanks for the vote of confidence ( I think) but you won't see the 9 in any of those video's. On the other hand you will see the 9 at :
Serpentine Hot Springs www.nps.gov/archive/bela/html/serpent.htm or
www.cordovaalaska.com or www.yakutat.net .
