Ok, I'm about ready to rivet the top skin to the tailcone, but before I do I
wanted to know what I should do that would make life easier. Went to the
archives and found that maybe I should put in a shelf for the Crossbow or
something similar, maybe put in some conduit, maybe install an ELT antennae.
I won't do a hat shelf at this point in time, since I'm running slow and
will wait on that. I want to do an overhead console, but not air
conditioning, so don't need to reserve space for that. I will do a camera
in embedded in the VS, but that simply means routing some wires.

What say the collective? What should one do when it's easy to get inside?

Also, lost my hard drive and haven't been able to update the web site.
Anyone have experience at retrieving contents of hard drives that fail to
spin up?

John
I ran my rudder cables before installing the rear deck. Bolted the retainer
clamp around the plastic sleeve tubes through the side skins, ran the cables
forward through two snap rings and left the forward ends in the shipping bag
rolled up and zip tied for future connection.

I'm very near joining the tailcone to the fuselage. Should I take care of these areas now before the two sections are joined? I'm concerned about weight being in the tailcone once it's attached. How are you guys addressing this after the fact?

Thanks,

Sean
What weight are you talking about? Accessory weight, physical body weight
when crawling in to make connections? I haven't added weight.

I'm talking about crawling around in there to make the connections to the
static lines, wiring, cables, etc. Seems like it would be a bad thing after
the connection of the fuselage and the tailcone.

Anything you can put inside the tail cone will make life easier later.
However, you will probably have to crawl back there once or twice later
anyway. I wouldn't worry about your body weight. Someone did a test some
time ago. It took some 2000lbs before a rivet gives in if I remember
correctly. But try to distribute your weight as much as you can. I put
pieces of soft foam in between the J-channels and a 1/2" board on top. It
works out fine.

I would recommend that you measure the size you want for your AHRS shelf. I don't remember off hand how big I made mine, and naturally I am not at the airport to measure. I think you will want at least an 8" wide shelf. Now is the time to drill four mounting holes in the longaron, two on each side of the fuselage behind the baggage / tailcone bulkhead for mounting angle cross members to mount your self on. I used 3/4" alum. angle for my cross members. Drilling the holes in the longaron after you put on the top deck is a pain. Ask me how I know. If you drill and mount the cross members before putting on the top deck you can drill and mount the shelf in the cross members pretty easy even after the cabin has been mounted and the top deck of the tail cone riveted.

Russ, thanks.

Should the cross members be just aft of the F-1006, which is the rib that sits at the front of the tailcone, and is the one I think you're referring to below, or should it be further back, behind the F-1007? The reason I ask has to do with the battery. Should the AHRS be further away from the battery? I'm worried about some type of magnetic interference stemming from the battery. Does the placement also have to be mindful of the seatbelt cables?

My best,

A&Ps squeeze into the tail cones of Cessna 150s from time to time using
the same method with no problems. It maybe be a good idea to put a
temporary support stand under the rear tie down ring. Depending on the
weight and balance it would be a bad thing to have it tip back on to its
tail.
