After spedning a couple of hours trying to remove the white plastic
(with black backing/glue) from the rear wing spar channel of my old RV-4
kit, I'm beginning to question the wisdom of removing it at all.
Yes, I checked the archive and the hairdryer/hetgun helps, but the
material is so old or fragile that it beaks. I can remove maybe an inch
before it breaks, then have to start again with a plastic spartula to
get an edge to hold onto to pull, etc.
Anybody see any liability in leaving it on?

Cover the affected area with old towels and soak them with mineral spirits. You may need to soak them for a few hours but this worked very well on my F1 project.

Thank you Danny. This is one for the archives!
It works!
I left a miniral spirits soaked rag on part of the plastic overnight and it now peels right of (or some more stubborn sections scape off easily with a plastic spatula without marring the aluminum).

Just another hint. Left that duct tape on too long, or it got baked in the sun. Many years ago we had that problem, the tape came off but the glue residue remained on the raw unpainted skin. Someone on line suggested coating the glue with mayonnaise (kinda heavy) & covering with a cloth, let stand overnight. The next day 90% came right off, reapplied and removed the rest the next day. I have no idea why it worked but it did. Final cleanup with acetone.

| Mayonaise is oil mixed with eggs. The oil was the solvent, and the eggs made it thick so it didn't just run off. Almost any petroleum product will work though!

Ahh Yes. Guess the mayo would also not evaporate over night like most "petroleum products" would. It would remain and soften the glue sloowllly. This would allow it to be removed without scrubbing it with scotchbrite. KABONG Do Not Archive 8*)

The mayo is a great idea. Even if its wrong, it's not so bad when you have to eat your mistakes.

With that comment, I think we need to learn a little bit more about "The
|
History of Mayonnaise".
Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's Mayonnaise was
manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars
of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was
to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New
York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise
ever delivered to Mexico.
But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship
hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost.
The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were
eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their
anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning,
which they still observe to this day.
The National Day of Mourning is known, of course, as
