Jack,
No doubt Dan appreciates the advertisement (SPAM) but IMHO your just wrong!
No doubt Dan;s weather page WAS great!!! But it's NOT FREE anymore???!!! With the 'free' function it will no longer remember your location or allow you to set a radius . .. it's nearly worthless! Without the $5.00 per month fee it doesn't even do route weather. I'm not saying it's not worth it if you fly several trips per month but it's not much good for the occasional flyer anymore.
Golden Eagle looks like the only choice now if you don't want to pay a monthly fee!
What am I missing???

For those who aren't aware... there is an OUTSTANDING new tool available for aviation weather info. Check out www.weathermeister.com
This aviation weather website was developed and is maintained by Dan Checkoway (aka 'Sharpie') who is a SoCAL RV-7 builder/formation pilot and frequent contributor to Kitplanes Magazine. Many of you have probably visited his RV-7 website.... www.rvproject.com. Hands down the best RV builder website on the internet.
Dan has created a MASTERPIECE!!! Weathermeister.com is a FREE web-based tool that will absolutely change the way you currently get your weather infomation when flying locally or coast-to-coast in your RV. After experiencing www.weathermeister.com, you will NEVER go back to DUATS.
Weathermeister.com displays numerous weather charts, winds aloft info, best economy and best speed altitudes to fly based on up-to-the-minute winds aloft data, TFRs, forecast weather conditions at your destination and airports under your flight path, and much, much more.
If you sign up for the premium service ($4.95 monthly or $49.95 yearly...), you can store your own aircraft info and frequently flown cross-country routes that will accurately give you fuel burn, ETE, etc. The premium service is an unbelievable value once you see how powerful, and easy to use the tools available really are. I encourage everyone to visit www.weathermeister.com., evaluate it's awesome capabilities, and sign-up for the premium service to keep the site alive! (NOTE: The Premium service provides a LOT more info than the free site.)
As a government employee, I still don't understand how a fellow like Dan Checkoway can single-handedly provide such a useful tool for evaluating flight weather conditions when the entire government (read FAA...) can not provide readable or barely understandable weather info to us. Weathermeister.com displays it all so clearly.
If you haven't checked out www.weathermeister.com, you owe it to yourself to try it. I use it EVERY time I intend to fly...
Tell a friend about the site. They WILL thank you!!!

It cracks me up how folks who have no problem spending tens of thousands of dollars avionics and a gazillion more on stuff in a homebuilt plane that you can't find in a 747, and then go all glassy-eyed at the prospect of spending $49.95 a year so they're a more informed -- and presumably safer -- pilot.
Obviously folks have a right not to spend money they don't wish to spend, but there's a bit of an entitlement mentality at work when people who are doing all the work and spending money on servers etc. to provide something free, all of a sudden get ripped for being compensated for their effort.
If you don't want to pay, don't pay. But please have the good sense not to belittle even the "free" stuff as "worthless."
At the very LEAST, you got what you paid for. Stop complaining about it.

I've been using GoldenEagle for the past year now, and find it amazing
that you can get all of that for FREE. It's a fantastic program,
and worth a try for anyone who hasn't seen it. Not only that, but
after using it for a while, at OSH I decided to buy ChartCase Express
for in-flight tracking and charting. That too is a very cool program
and has all the low-enroute, sectional, WAC, and terminal approach
charts, plus more, and includes a terrain view EFIS with HITS, similar
to flying with a Chelton system. The nice thing is, you can save
your route in Golden Eagle Flight Prep, and then import it into
Chart Case Express. Now Chart Case is definitely not free, but they're
giving a heck of a program away for free with Golden Eagle, trying
to lure you to their paid-for software....it sure worked on me.
None of that is to knock Dan's site. I haven't looked at it but
briefly. The only disappointment worth mentioning with the limited
exposure I have to it is that the page is that the free side of
it is covered by "Ads by google", which makes it lose appeal for
myself. On the plus side, it is web based, so you don't require
a software download, so there is a market for the info.
On the flip side, if you're really in need of an online flight planner,
it looks like FlightPrep http://www.flightprep.com/ also has an online
version that would be excellent and include more feature wise than
you could almost ever expect, but you'll pay $149/yr for it. For an
IFR flier though, this might be more of what you'd need considering you
can even get approach plates out of it.

Bob (and others),
I apologize if you consider my post regarding 'Weathermeister.com' as SPAM. It never crossed my mind that it was either SPAM or an advertisement for the site or Dan Checkoway.
I am extremely impressed with the weather info and it's capabilities and thought I was doing the RV commmunity a favor by mentioning the site to others who may not be aware of it.
In the future, I will keep my opinions and recommendations to myself and STAY in the lurker mode....
Cheers,

I see nothing wrong with pilot input on good and bad products.
Personally I am not happy that the winds/weather info provided
by Dan's website is now a fee-based service but such is life.

Jack,
I for one am glad you posted the message about Weathermeister.com. And because you did, I also became aware of the Golden Eagle & Cirrus software for DUATS as well as FlightAware.com. I did not know any of these existed... So please do not become a "lurker". It is through the experienced insight that you guys have, and are willing to share, that ignorant newbies like me can learn. I sincerely appreciate everyone's contributions.

Jack,
You should never apologize for bringing what you believe to be a great aviation product and value to the attention of other builders/pilots... that's the purpose of these lists -- to share information about what's good and what's bad. There is a vocal minority out there with the twisted notion that "if it costs money it's bad". I suspect they don't work for free and question why they expect others to. Money and/or profit is not a dirty word, it's all about VALUE, in other words what do we receive for a given amount of money.
Dan - Thanks for bringing another cost-effective weather option to the aviation community.
Jack - Thanks for bringing it to our attention, Dan didn't want to for fear of the same misguided attitude noted above and we need to know about it.

Jack, it wasn't SPAM. It was a good reminder of a useful tool. It's good to give an opinion of a tool here so others can come back with their opinion of other, good tools, and others can go take a test drive and benefit from the new knowledge. I've benefited from such SPAM discussions in the past, and hope to in the future. Don't just lurk. Put on the flame suit and keep posting. If there are folks who disagree with your opinion, fine. Some might be more "civil" in their retort, but what the hey. It rains here in Oregon, but what beauty.

This conversation reminds me of an incident here on the RV list some years ago. A guy named Steve had a computerized system for laying out and cutting instrument panels. I think he still does it, and I have only heard great things about him and his work, EXCEPT in one case from one “customer”.
Steve offered to use his equipment and expertise to create name tags for anyone on the list so they could make contact with each other at flyins. He offered to do it for FREE – no cost, not even for materials or postage. But of course he would do it in his spare time, so it might take awhile.
You guessed it … someone decided he wasn’t quick enough and started bitching and badmouthing the guy right here on the RV list, for a FREE service.
Dan Checkoway has provided more free and helpful services than anyone else I can think of, (with the possible exceptions of Randy Levold and Sam Buchanon) on or off the RV list. His website is probably the best reference anywhere in existence about building an RV; his articles in Kit Planes magazine are excellent, and now I see he is conducting workshops with SportAir on building RV’s for those who want to get a taste of what is in store for them. He has provided for free this great site for checking and decoding weather information. Now he has enhanced and expanded it into a fee based service, which costs roughly the same as a gallon of avgas a month, and some of you guys are crying about it?
How embarrassing for the rest of us.
Terry

Yes.......Dan has done more for me and my plane than just about anyone on or
off the list. Man if I had to pay for his on list and off list advice to me
I would have to added a bunch more to the cost of the plane. Sam and
Walter's web sites have also added a great deal to my plane.
So with that said .......like noses and other body parts ........everyone
has an opinion. Some I like and others I think stink.

store for them. He has provided for free this great site for checking and
decoding weather information. Now he has enhanced and expanded it into a
fee
based service, which costs roughly the same as a gallon of avgas a month,
and some of you guys are crying about it?
How embarrassing for the rest of us.

No doubt Dan;s weather page WAS great!!! But it's NOT FREE anymore???!!!
With the 'free' function it will no longer remember your location or allow
you to set a radius . .. it's nearly worthless! Without the $5.00 per
month fee it doesn't even do route weather. I'm not saying it's not worth
it if you fly several trips per month but it's not much good for the
occasional flyer anymore.
Golden Eagle looks like the only choice now if you don't want to pay a
monthly fee!
What am I missing???

Yep.
The FREE version WAS great before it got crippled.
Nothing quite like 'truth in advertising' to stir the hornet's nest, Bob.
)
Like you... my style of flying does NOT JUSTIFY any fee based product at
this time.
I have Golden Eagle installed, but I am much more familiar using Cirrus.
Either meets my needs and then some. Soooo...
How much money is in my plane or bank account is irrelevant.
Value, like beauty, is in the eye of the beerholder [beholder].
Again, CIRRUS 5 and Golden Eagle FlightPrepR flight planner are still....
FREE!

Frank you are not helping to keep the state I have lived in all of my
life from becoming over populated like the state you want to escape
from. So NO, you don't get a break oops to late, it is getting
next to impossible to even drive to Portland from where I live
20 miles the west.

No one said Dan was not a good guy.
He is only providing a very nice solution and format for Government generated information using his computer knowledge. I just do not think it is worth one more low cost of $X.95 per month. It is a marketing response.

Yes.......Dan has done more for me and my plane than just about anyone on or
off the list. Man if I had to pay for his on list and off list advice to me
I would have to added a bunch more to the cost of the plane. Sam and
Walter's web sites have also added a great deal to my plane.

I
can think of, (with the possible exceptions of Randy Levold and Sam
Buchanon) on or off the RV list. His website is probably the best reference
anywhere in existence about building an RV; his articles in Kit Planes

I wonder how many people who are complaining that Dan moved his content to premium status made a contribution to his effort back when there was just a tiny link there asking people to donate?
All the time I hear -- appropriately so -- "I can't thank Dan enough" for either the default instruction manual or his various applications.
But apparently they can...they just don't want to.
[quote]If you don't like the fact Dan isn't giving you something for nothing, have the good sense to shut up about it. You just sound ridiculous with your complaining. Do not archive. [b]
