How do you make a living and money to fly. This is a way to know more about each other on the forum. I'll start it off.

I am a 21 year veteran of the Montgomery Fire Department in Montgomery Al. I am currently a Fire Investigator and no longer ride the trucks. I also own an Ornamental Iron business on my days off from the department. I am setting up my Blacksmith Shop and should have it done in a few months.

Here's my first post in the new format! I fly air charter for a living out of Atlanta. Currently I am flying the Lear 60 and 35. I keep my Firestar about 1 hour outside of Atlanta so in between flying at work, I try to make it out about once a week to for some real flying in the Kolb.

Well, if you check my "profile", you will see that I'm a "Government Trained Mumbo-Jumbo Interpreter"...

I commend you for 21 years of riding the trucks, that's a tough job and one I don't think I could do...

Kip,

I am not too far from you in Montgomery. I have got my eye on a FSII and if I can get it maybe we can meet up somewhere and get one of those 50.00 hamburgers. Most general aviation guys say that the fun flying comes when they get into their kitplane.

I'm a CPA but that's not were my money came from to buy my Kolb. Six years ago I divorced my wife. Since then I was able to save what she normally spent and was able to buy my plane. She told me for 20 years that we couldn't afford a plane but she knew that someday I would pursue my dream.
So I traded her in on one, so to speak.
I love my Firestar. I can ride her all day everyday and she never complains!

I am a self employed Welder, Machinist, Mechanic & building kit planes for
others in the evenings and weekends I have been into flying since 1994 when I
purchased a Vector 627 Ultralight at a yard sale brought it home after dark one
evening when the wife didnt know what I was doing but I spent most of the
night putting it together in my shop the next day I did a good inspection and
decided it was ready to fly & so was I
so up the road I went with it untill I got to my neibors field friends
Blocking traffic every one thought I was just going to go play in the field that
afternoon but I had it in my mind that it was made for flying and I was going
for it and I flew it for a few years had fun with it but never dared to
venture to far with it as it was to slow and only five gallons didnt seem to last
long enough to go to far But I flew the hell out of it with out any lessons
other than my younger years with Radio controlled Airplanes and always had a want
for a Kolb since the first time I saw one in a magazine and after many years
of working hard getting through some tuff times I was able to purchase my very
own and its really been great owning one but now its time I got a two seater
because my wife likes to fly as well but I need to sell this nice little plane
to someone that is ready to join our Kolb Brother hood so I can afford to
purchase a Mk3 Classic

I hope I didnt bore you with this post Just thought I would like to share
this with all of you so you will know me a bit better

I'm an instructional systems designer for a division of EDS called Learning
Solutions. We design and develop training for other companies. The joke used
to be "have flipchart, will travel" but most of what we do today is
web-based training. So, yes, I'm both a desk jockey and a computer geek.
I've been in the human performance business for nearly 20 years, but it's a
second career. Before that, I was in the retail produce business, having my
own store, Ken's Greengrocer, back in Dallas. I do website design and
development for small and home-based business as a sideline. I'm divorced,
but in a long, steady relationship with a wonderful woman who supports my
desire to fly. I have one child, a 22 year old daughter named Jennifer of
whom I'm as proud as can be. I'll be 49 next month and have been flying
since 1982. I've flown 15 ultralights, having started out in the
weight-shift Eagle. I've also flown five different types of GA airplanes and
one glider. However, I've only owned three aircraft, all ultralights. The
others were either rented or loaners. In all that time, I've had some
precautionary landings, but only two unintended engine-out situations: one
due to running out of fuel and one due to throwing a rod. I'm politically
conservative and theologically liberal. I'm chubby and plump, a right jolly
old elf.

I'm really enjoying this occupations thread, and gotr a great chuckle out of
John Murr's. Here's a little of mine:

Went from teaching Scuba Diving in L.A. to driving a Kenworth logging truck
in WA state, then logging (falling timber) in Idaho. 20 years ago got into
refrigeration/air conditioning/restaurant appliance service and was self
employed for 12 years. For 9 years now have been an engineer at a Palm
Springs luxury hotel and was recently promoted to Chief Engineer. Also,
for 9 years, have been dabbling at building a Kolb Mk III and frustrating
all those waiting to see an end to the B.S. and wondering if it'll ever fly.

recall he was 14 when he got the kit...
How long does it take for a set of tires to dry-rot off a Kolb....? 2
sets...? 10 years a set...?
Hmmmm....

OK, I do like this threads concept, so here’s my humble introduction...

Kolb fan since I first watched them fly at Sun'n'Fun / Oshkosh 1994. Been back to Oshkosh every year since, have watched many different planes fly as I dreamed of which one would some day be mine to enjoy and after all those years, the first impression still stands as the best! No finer light plane found yet that can beat a Kolb!

So, after 11 years of dreaming, I was lucky enough to find the right bird (Firestar 2), with the irreplaceable help from this very group (thanks Denny!!)... and awaiting the spring for my first flights.

Occupation wise, began working during High School in restaurants, most famously for being the kid that worked at the Playboy resort in northern NJ... once I became an adult, worked in the auto collision repair field for 5 years, that led to a job building cars at the factory, when the Nissan plant found its way to TN. Been there since, right at 20 years now. Still dabbled in car restoration and repair on and off, and probably always will. But I have a new house, and when the big shop (foundation going down this spring) is finally built it will be more a hanger than an auto shop. And of course, RC airplanes are always buzzing the back yard as well!

Next big step will be getting some instruction in a like type aircraft, despite on and off again training over the years, do not have a PPL yet, but am thinking the new Sport Pilot route may best suit my aviation interests. So, are there any MKIII's nearby that are willing to show a newbie around in a Kolb? Hope to hear from you soon, and thanks to all for a great list, and source for so much valuable information!
