I was wondering if anyone had any experience with Subaru engines on a Kolb mk3, I am rebuilding a mk3 that was damaged in a hard landing I will be installing a 503dcdi to start with but I would eventually like to upgrade to some type of four stroke a 912 is Ideal but slightly out of my price range, I have been looking into the geo,VW,and Subaru conversions as an inexpensive alternative, I like the Subaru because they seem to be more reliable or atleast that's what I hear and its liquid cooled for an easy heater install, Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Ken Richter

Ken

In case you haven't noticed I like VW engines. When I was researching engine
alternatives I was looking very fondly at Subaru engines. They have a fairly
good reputation and there are a bunch of companies that make conversions for
them. The only problem is they are a bit heavy for a Kolb. I talked to a guy
that put a direct drive Subaru on his MKIII and told me he was very happy
with it. After a short time he sold the plane and the new owner promptly put
a rotax on it. He didn't say why he sold it or why the new owner changed
engines but I have to feel it was not a good match. As I have said many
times direct drive auto engines don't work well on Kolbs. I flew a direct
drive VW for 4 years.
