Have a good day job as a physician.

Spend a lot of my time doing consulting work for various government related
issues and I also have a unique side job that allows me to fly a lot of
different airplanes and helicopters.

The best therapy airplane I fly is a J-3 Cub but they are all long in the
tooth and after being a 'real' airplane owner (172) and dealing with all the
crap that goes along with that, plus not being able to enjoy what I enjoy
with the Cub which is open door low and slow, I decided to sell the Skyhawk
and pursue what I think is the modern equivalent; a Kolb.

Did a lot of research and what convinces me is a design tested to
destruction in flight. Hard to beat a designer who has the conviction to
wreck his airplane in midair just to prove a point. That and numerous
stories of long distance flights to hostile environments.

While I am not yet a Kolb owner I am a few weeks from a trip to London and a
deposit on a Mark IIIX or Kolbra. Got some special plans for whichever and
it will certainly be a unique airplane when it is finished.

Chee... I must be some sort of freak. Been married to same girl 66 years. Learned to fly 1935, bought first plane 1936. Curtiss Wright Jr. $250.00. Worked with a barnstormer and Ford Tri Motor making parachute jumps 1937-38. Also with Air Show making jumps while handcuffed behind my back by local police. Only had to free one hand.
Came to my senses, married in 1939. Wife took lessons in J3 Cub, soloed, flew twice again and hasn't touched one since. During WW2 worked on B24's, PBY's, became instrument tech., worked instrument repair on B24's, B29's, P38's. Got some good rides in B24's, B29's but not P38's. Volunteered for service, rejected because of back injury incurred jumping (landed on a tombstone in a cemetery)
After war had jewelry store for awhile. Recruited by Hughes Aircraft 1954. Worked in Research & Development 29 years. 2-1/2 years on development of first Geo Synchronous Satellite (Syncom), 1-1/2 yrs. on Surveyors sent to moon before men. 1 + yrs. on mechanical safety and arming device for atomic warhead missiles. Later misc. classified missiles. Retired to Tenn. Brought my Aeronca Champ, built four fixed wing experimental licensed single seat planes and one more gyrocopter.
Made seven trips to Mt. Ararat looking for Noah's Ark. It's located but Turks wont let us into the area.
Three children, twelve grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren. At 88 about ready to stand before my Maker and be chastised for cluttering up His moon with my Surveyor hardware.

I just knew I should have chimed in earlier with my biomass, before
the heavy hitters laid all their reps out fer all Kolb-dom to hold in
awe.

UL-wise I'm a neophyte ( I dislike the appellation: newbie) having
snuck in after a disastrous bout with a ham-handed vascular mechanic
who wasn't even skilled enough to off me while I was on the slab.
Some 10 years ago I heard vile rumors be bandied about at faa
"head"qtrs that a new two-pronged program was being instituted to get
rid of the two seat so-called ULs, and patch up RecPilot. While
trying to regain my senses in the ICU after this emergency chest
cracking I considered not being able to again pass any kind of faa-
mandated flight physical, but dumbly thought in six months I'd b back
in N711RN Cessna Cardinal, winging about the ZI, visiting friends
across the States, just like we'd planned upon my retirement. But NO,
now my EKG has a "funny" blip that my local cardioquack says would
down-check me.

After several months of airplane-deprived depression, brought on by
literally giving away old 711N, my good wife bought me a Kolb FireFly
(of course it didn't really strain her purse, as I has previously
given her the $45k+ from selling the Cardinal) which was supposed to
again
enable me to launch into the azure blue (ain't that redundant?) and
throw off the fetters of we earth-bound mortals. And it did. Local
newspaper (The Winchester Astonisher& Daily Blatt) ran an article
with pictures. The last sentence is worth noting. When asked by the
enquiring reporteress whether just flyng a UL beat not flying at all,
I said "It surely is better than looking up at the birds' asfg's. She
was kind enough to print: Looking up at the birds.

Soloed in a 40 hp J3, 1941. Entered Navy '42 AvCad. Out '46, BSEE '49
Purdue. Circuit design engr. on team that developed present color TV
system. Orders to go to Korea, but transferred to group developing
Mark (X) IFF from wartime Mark (V). Took team to Korea to install and
evaluate IFF in wartime situation. (didn't escape Korea after all!)
Further tests all across ZI, Labrador, Greenland, Iceland, Europe, N.
Africa, China. European mgr '53-57 Wiesbaden Germany. Mark (x) IFF
is basis for our ATCRABS transponder system.

Positions as Manager/director with Hazeltine Electronics, Burroughs,
Collins Radio, Litton, and The Mitre Corp. Retired '86. Five kids,
put 'em all through college. Married 59 years. Of all planes I had,
the Cardinal was the only one she liked. She has a possibly terminal
disease which keeps me from further flying.

Hi,
I guess I will get it over with, As most of you know from my occasional
posts that I am the Larry from Oregon. I started out in WVa, but left at age
18. I was the first kid to qualify for the Army's Warrant Officer training
in WVA, when they opened it to High School grads, in 1963. Took all the
tests and was waiting for a board of Officers to approve me. Apparently no
one else in the state was either smart enough to pass or perhaps dumb enough
to try. Patientence not being one of my finer qualities, I gave up on them
and went to Michigan to work in construction with my brother. Worked there
for a year and left to go to Calif. Worked a bit at construction, Couldn't
stand the shoddy work, so took a job as a machinist in Santa Anna. Met and
married my wife Karen, and quit my job a week later. Moved to Rogue River
Oregon, almost starved to death working as a salesman, selling Fuller Brush.
Finally got a job in a Department store selling vac. and sewing machines.
Received my draft notice Christmas eve 1995, but just to show them, I
enlisted for three years. Served in Alaska as a MP and Dog Handler. When it
was time to rotate out of Alaska they asked me where I wanted to go. I said
any place on the west coast. I ended up as a Block commander in maximum
security in the stockade at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Upon my release we
moved back to Oregon, working in a Diving board factory until my acceptance
to the Oregon State Police. I worked there for four years until I discovered
an intolerance for drunken assholes. I then went to school to learn to be a
Farrier. I was a natural, I had worked with Horses asses for quite a long
time by then. In the summer I shod horses and in the winter I drove towtruck
and school busses. A friend talked me into taking a job as a welder for the
Burlington Northern RR. The only reason that I took it was that all the kids
seemed to give me all kinds of colds and stuff. I seemed to be sick all
winter long. So I guess it was self defense. The RR was an ideal job, I had
my own truck and a territory of 200 miles of track, so I never got tired of
it since I was never in one place all the time. I retired last year after 30
years, and I like it a lot.
As for the planes, it seems that the short circuiting of one posible
outcome of my life, by not waiting to go to the Army as a Helicopter pilot
preyed on my mind a lot. At age 55 in a serious bout of Manopause I began to
ponder what I had not done with my life that I wished I had. I determined
that flying was what I was missing. I did my research and decided on a Kolb
primarily because I could fold the wings and keep it at home. I talked to
Dennis at Kolb about the different types of Kolbs and on his advice I
started looking for a Firestar. I found one that I liked in Lincoln Neb. I
built a trailer and pulled it out there, picking it up in March,1997. It had
4 hours on the meter. The guy built it, tried to taxi it and scared himself
to death so decided that he liked building more than flying. I bought a Mark
III a few years ago and flew it for one summer. It only had a 582 on it and
I decided that I either need to sell one or the other and couldn't seem to
part with the Firestar, and couldn't afford a 912, so I sold the Mark III.
Karen and I are in the process of selling our home of 27 years and
hopefully buying a place just east of the Alvord Desert in Eastern Oregon.
The one that we are looking at has a 40x50 hanger and a 2500 foot runway,
Not that I will ever need that much, but I am hoping that some friends might
visit.

Larry, Oregon

." Been married to same girl 66 years."
Ray,
Of all your accomplishments this is the most impressive. Mom and Dad were
also married in 39 . Dad died in 1985 and Mom died last week. She was also
88.
