To recap, last weekend we found that 5, 7 and 9 were not firing.
This weekend, I switched plugs between 5 and 4, between 7 and 8 and between 9 and 1. When I did that 5 was firing and 4 wasn't, neither 7 or 8 were firing, and both 1 and 9 were firing. I then switched 7 and 8 back resulting in 7 not firing and 8 running normally. This all applies to both mags. So - to me this says that:
The plugs that were originally in 5 are bad.
The plugs that were originally in 7 are bad, but there's potentially something else wrong with 7. I did notice that the fitting on the plug wire that screws on to the plug itself is a little deformed like it was over torqued. I don't think this has any relation to operation but I thought I'd bring it up since it is a discrepency.
The plugs that were in 9 just didn't like being there. (In other words - I have no idea why they're both working now.)
My idea is to buy 6 new plugs and try replacing the ones in the bad cylinders. If that works then I'll replace them all. I don't want to replace them all until we know it is the problem due to funding constraints.
Anyone have any insight considering this new info? Where's the best place to get Champion plugs?

Scott,
If you insist on replacing the Russian plugs, I suggest you get a set of Chinese plugs from Doug Sapp. The Russian plugs are getting harder to come by. The Champion plugs did not hold up as well as the chinese ones. I have 150 hours on mine and they look great at this annual.
For the cost of 18 new Chinese or Champion plugs, you can install the wiring and plug conversion, you keep hearing about. The future cost are about $2.50 per plug verses $ 40 per plug. You will solv e the issue of is this a plug wire problem because that is why I suspect you have dead plugs. The fire is not getting beyond a break in your plug wire within the harness. When it comes time for me to change these plugs, I am planning to bite the bullet and install the conversion kit on my 50 and 52. The 50 is getting pretty close to that as we speak.

Scott,
I recommend the same. I chased "Plug problems" until I finally determined that it was my harness that was braking down. The standard harness though well built (Its hardware) it is the wire's insulation, is the weakest point and it will not out last the hardware. It is very susceptible to water and becomes brittle over time (not engine run time but plain just sitting there). When that happens, she'll start arcing out to the shielding. This arcing is intermittent at times and hard to trace down. If you seem to be having more than just one plug problem and it seem intermittent, it will more than likely be the harness wires have had it.
If you've ever had to rewire one of these harnesses you'll find it is a bitch! I've done it and it ani't worth the time. If you had an engine analyzer, it would be easy to find the cylinder that is giving you trouble which would lead you to the wire But converting to the simple auto harness and plugs, is a whole lot cheaper than getting one of them. One entire engine plug change with auto plugs later, will pay for changing just for what you pay for the plugs. (Off the Internet for $1.70/plug). And if one of them goes bad and you don't know which one, you can change out all the 18 for the price of one Champion or standard plugs.
The conversion took me eight hours. 4 hours to get the old system off (one nut took me a good :30). It took 4 hours to install the new one (I was taking my time and the weather was bad anyway). It is one of the best things I've done to this engine.

Buy the replacement 8mm automotive racing spark plug wires and plugs
from Dennis.
You will save yourself a lot of time in the end, and a lot of money too.
Even the Russian engine experts agree on this. Sergei Boriak flys with
them on HIS SU-31. Hubie Tolson flies with them on HIS 31, 29, and 26.
Scott, meaning no personal offense to you at all, but you've received
this advice from some of the best experts out there, and bad spark plugs
wires explain ALL of your issues. Period... End of story.
Again, I don't mean to sound anything other than polite, but if you
ignore all the experts that have told you to do this, and continue to
mess around, mess around, mess around... then I respectfully submit you
are not exercising good judgement. Spark plugs simply do not "like" one
cylinder more than another. However, partially fouled plugs WILL fire
in another cylinder that has better spark energy than the one they just
came out of .
Buy the replacement 8mm automotive spark plug wires and plugs. Or...
Continue to scratch you head... Your choice of course.
Sincerely,
Mark Bitterlich

As we speak, he is converting my 50. Came back yesterday evening with a cold cylinder on #7 and running rough on the #1 mag. on airborne mag check. Cut the sortie short and RTB'd. Measured the cylinder head temps with a laser thermometer. All but #7 were in the 230 to 240 deg C temps. Thought about the options, talked to Dennis and said instead of chasing a bad plug and plug wire, bite the bullet an convert. These are Russian plugs and wires that are over 5 years old. They were not as best as I can tell changed at the time of IRAN at Shackety. Sure, I can test the plugs on the champion plug testor, change the front (#1 mag) plug to the back (#2 mag supplied plug wire) and do hi tension testing of the plug wires. After doing airborn mag tests to see if the problem went away, I will have spent just as much time as to do the change. So Am biting the bullet and converting.
