CJ6's with M14P's - I am looking for information on which spin on oil filter
system you have added to your airplane. Any photos will also be very
helpful.
Thanks for your input.

Dennis
I used a 10 micron filter plumbed into the oil line that is just prior to entering into the oil cooler. 50 hours on it and absolutely no problems. The location is clean and easy. No lines to cut into, and only one line to form. It keeps the clutter away from the engine. Changing the filter does not spill onto the airframe. Since you don't have to cut any lines, you have the option of going back to the original configuration in the field if you need to. See attached for location and fit. The filter is for high performance autos. If you are interested, I'd have to check my notes on where it came from.

Have you looked at the Gorrila from Air Wolf?

I use a Marion filter and buy the S-28 10 micron filters. After an oil and filter change, I can easily cut open the can and check the filter. It has a built-in by-pass valve and a port where you can screw in a pressure switch if you what a 'oil by-pass' light in your cockpit.
I've use the system on my airplane 'since day one'. I read some where, that contaminants in oil larger than 25 micron will cause engine wear. So I use the 10 micron filter. I really believe it kept a lot more damage from happening to the engine, when at 438 hours a improperly factory installed ring let go a long with some goodly pieces of piston.
My engine has 1300 hours on it now. I use straight 50 or 60 weight detergent oil, changed every 30 to 35 hours. Compressions are in the low to mid 70's. The engine is now using around 1 qt every 1 1/2 hours. I also have a pre-oiler which I use on the first start of each day.

Jim,
I am very interested in finding out more information on the parts required
and where they can be obtained and any particulars for the installation.
Feel free to send it off list if you want. dsavarese(at)elmore.rr.com.

I think the Gorilla is overkill for our size engines since the Gorilla was
designed for large radial engines of 2000 Cu.In. and above. But Airwolf
does manufacture other remote oil filter kits that could easily be adapted
to our radial engines.

I have installed an airwolf system on a CJ. They are supporters of the
Redstar magazine. If anyone orders one please thank John (the owner) for
supporting our group.
Since putting on the filter I change oil at 45 hr intervals. In 3 oil
changes I should pay for the system in labor savings.
My oil analysis has also gotten better with the filter.
This is one mod I recommend for all our planes

Hi Dennis,
I hope all is well with you and yours.
I am using a standard Champion CH48109. The oil filter adapter is from J.C
Whitney and is listed in their catalog as: Oil Filter Relocation kit, part
#14DY6174A. Price is about $50.00 for the kit which included other stuff
you won't need. I have it mounted on the firewall on the right side between
the firewall's edge and the air starter - perfect location (at least for
me). You will need 2ea -12 90degrees angled fitting (one of them on a
swivel) and the male-to-male threaded adaptor (to accept the CH-4801) - this
is a standard threaded adaptor.
The filter is mounted inverted, thus minimizing oil spills at change time.
It's been working great for the past 5 years.
Happy Holidays to All Red Star lovers!

Sam,
Does that filter head have a high pressure bypass valve on it?

Hi Doug,
Yes, it does. The Champion Oil Filter is a FAA approved filter widely used
on many aircraft. The high pressure bypass is an FAA requirement for it to
be certified for aviation use. This is an important point and one of the
reasons I went with this type oil filter.

Good point Sam.
The Champion (or other) certificated filter is also strong enough to
withstand scavenge pump pressure on radial or other dry sump engines.
Scavenge pressure is unregulated and in certain conditions may reach 300
psi.
