Hi guys,
I finally flew the 601HDS after painting it with an AFS catalyzed
urethane, beginning last April. The Subaru started very smoothly and on
taxiing, I became aware that the engine and airframe sounds had changed.
The engine noise previously echoed and carried through the skins as a
high pitch vibration was reduced or simply canceled out. This was very
noticeable in flight.
I realized that the added 13 pounds of paint seal and thickness had
affected the way the sound is conducted through the airplane. It’s
definitely an improvement, even before soundproofing.
The 70 inch 3 blade Warp Drive and Subaru have been described as a
relatively quiet combination and I would not have guessed that painting
this plane would make such a difference.
Thought you might find this of interest if you’re thinking “to paint or
not”.
Fly safely guys,

Larry
After I painted mine, it lost a lot of the oil canning that would happen just before a stall.

Replacement engine nearly installed, and should be flying again before Christmas.
