Listers,

I'm wanting to buy some labels for my panel and thought someone could point me to the right place. Here's what I think I want:

White print on a clear stick-on label. I prefer that it not be a water-based ink for durability.

Is there anyone out there who produces such a product?

Thanks,

Tommy Walker in Alabama

Take a look at those handheld label makers. They have many different fonts as well as sizes.

Looks like these tapes will do what you want in a Brother P-touch label
maker: TZ135 (1/2"), TZ145 (3/4"), TZS155 (1", extra strength adhesive)

I bought a kit from EAA for certifying a homebuilt for a few bucks. It contained a sheet of decals. AS and WagAero sell these too.

Hi Tommy,

Look into the Brother P-Touch label maker machines. Th eoffer different fonts and borders and the label material comes in different widths and different colors including clear with different ink colors. The labels are peel and stick adhesive and I've had good service from them in an open cockpit ultra-not-so-light.

Tommy, what I did was I went to a local company that made vinyl signs. They use a computer to make letters and numbers that have sticky adhesives on the back. They can make any kind of color background, lettering and size. I used them for everything, warnings, tail numbers and all panel words. Fast and cheep. Maybe you could find such a company near you. Also, they were thrilled to know they were making the letters for a homemade plane. FWIW, Best regards, Bill of Georgia [quote][b]

I put a bunch of P-touch labels on my Challenger II about a year ago & won't
make the same mistake again with my 701.
The label near the fuel filler cap is unreadable because P-touch labels
don't take well to solvents like fuel. My panel labels have discolored and
blurred somewhat and are starting to come loose.

Wish I could find a good source for inexpensive etched aluminum labels.

Tommy
I made a drawing of the labels we required in turbo cad & printed them out on A4 gloss photo paper to the size required.
Most were printed back with white letters to avoid reflections in canopy.
Ray took the photos to a local vinyl sign maker who scanned them & printed them out with a sticky backing, we cut them out removed back & stuck them on the panel have been on 6 months so far ok.

Have you tried the clear laser printer labels? I did up my whole panel with those and people always ask me what I did them with. The only thing better in my opinion would be a silk screen job (which anyone can do at home with a little time and inexpensive paints and tools)

These were made with a ~$120 P-Touch labeller, and the included software on a PC, which was connected to the P-Touch.

List,
I am not a builder yet. BUT, I have made several electronic gadgets and wanted a professional looking faceplate. I experimented with a variety of different things and ended up with silk screening.

I went to the local art supply store and purchased a T-shirt silk screen kit. I experimented with a variety of paints and found that thinned plastic model enamel works great. I tried to match the viscosity of the paint that came with the kit. I had to purchase more screen material during my experimentation. With about three tries I was able to draw a placard on the computer and transfer it to the screen material (per included instructions). I then took a piece of metal I sprayed black with an enamel shaker spray can and silk screened the white letters onto it. I think I spent two weekend days and invested about $30.00 for the kit and wasted materials until I came up with an acceptable result. The switchbox I made has been used and abused in my home entertainment center for about two years and none of the letters have shown any fading or scratching. I made a switchbox for a friend’s boat and sprayed flat clear over it. It too still looks great.

I found several kits available with a quick internet search. Perhaps one of the paint guys might have a better suggestion for the type of paint. With a small amount of experimentation and time any of you can make very professional looking placards for your projects.

P.S. Before I sent this e-mail, I changed the font to Courier, 12 points. That way it will display properly on the list. Notice that I don’t have any of the weird characters in the text above?
