On this note... When I first started building I saw the picture of a 601 on floats and loved the idea. I think I asked about it at the time and the responses I got suggested it was not the best of ideas. I know it is not overly common to put a low wing plane on floats, but I just can't shake the idea. (I don't even have a seaplane rating, but it is high on the flying wish list.)
With this thread, I'm just hoping for some people to throw out ideas/experiences that might be relevant to such an idea.
So...thoughts, ideas, experiences?
Thanks, Michael in NH

Glad to hear about this development. How about the 601XL? Can I get plans?

I fly a Kitfox III-A ...Its a bit of an odd ball either one of the first model III or the last model II. Like yourself I have always been thrilled at even the sight of the 601 on amphib floats.
The down sides to the configuration as I see it are. If you are going to remote places with large rocks forming the shore line beaching the plane could be a problem. Docking at wharves that have hand rails etc could be the same problem. pumping out the floats if the plane is still in the water could really be an aquatic (swimming) event as would be loading float lockers. Carrying anything on the struts would be a non event.
All those items are, to me, primarily convenience features or inconvenience features. I think you will find those who are actually flying their 601s on floats must really like them.... there are enough of them out there.
If I can ever come up with the cash I'll order mine the same day..... After all I still have the "Fox" to get in and out of the rough spots.

Hello Michael : I have a 601XL and have looked into putting it on floats . It is true that if you tie up to a dock there could be some clearance issues . However , a 601XL on amphibs (4 wheel ) negates the problem of having to buy gas at expensive Seaplane bases . Indeed I keep my 601 at an airport where I buy my gas . It is my intent to fish and if necessary beach the plane . Naturally you avoid a rocky shoreline whether or not it is a low wing or high wing .
I have discussed the issue of low wings verses high wings with knowledgeable persons who have experience with both . They pointed out the pros and cons of both and in conclusion it comes down to personal choice .
I live in Northern Ontario and floats would be nice to have .
It is a tough choice , if you already have a low wing , thats why I will be talking to Mark and Dave about floats for a 601XL .
One more point , the only people who were negative on low wing floats had no experience with same , go figure
Best wishes in your choice
