|
|
I have a 601XL Fuselage kit coming my way at the end of the month and I am researching the archives for all hints, tips and tricks I can find. One item I have seen briefly mentioned, but not in a lot of detail, was the suggestion of adding another access panel in the rear area of the fuselage. Does anybody have a description or picture of what you did that worked out well for you?
Thanks,
Dave Gallagher

Hi Dave,
The current kit includes a large door in the fuselage bottom. I went
ahead and built mine according to the plans without adding anything
in that area.
I am currently working on the center console between the seats and
wonder how I will access the cable terminations contained there. I
am also trying to figure out how to give good access to the rear of
the instrument panel. Many builders have taken different actions in
both of those areas, and the plans still don't include any features
for access to these areas after the plane is built.
Good luck,
Paul

As Paul mentioned the new kit has a large rear access door on the bottom. I got the kit from Zenith and added it and it has made things a lot easier during the build.
I made one change to the design and the change. I did away with the hinge. There is really no reason for it and it just gets in the way when you are going to use it. For photos go look in the fuselage section of my website.

Dave, I also have a drawing of the forward top skin access panel if you want it.

The pro side of the rear panel idea is that you can easily use platenuts and screws to make a slick opening in one or the other side skin back there and gain wonderful access to the lower elevator horn area. The down side is that's a bad place to add weight.... very far from the CG. Bottom line is that Chris Heintz didn''t feel it was needed so it is an elective thing. If you are adding something elective to the plane, throw it up in the air...... if it comes back down it's probably too heavy.

One reason for the hatch in the back is that planes with heavier engines put
the battery back there.

That makes sense. Since I'm using the Jabiru which is fairly light, my mission is to keep the weight minimal and keep what I absolutely need as close to the cg as possible.

Ok, I think I have my plan based on all of your great input. Due to the lower access door it looks like getting in the aft part of the fuselage is easier now than it was earlier on in the design.
Thanks a lot!
