First, HAPPY NEW YEAR to all!
Doing some hanger flying this morning at the local EAA hanger, the subject of flying off the initial hours on an ELSA came up. There seemed to be no clear consensus of what determined a “Certified” engine/prop combination. I have Googled all over the place this evening, and am now even more confused than I was!
I have visited lots of locations, as well as the FAA pages. The best I can come up with is that it is up to the judgment of the DAR, who signs off on your project as airworthy. I did find some information that says the DAR may be willing to listen to arguments about 25 hours of test flight time, provided you can prove your engine/prop combination has been FAA approved on other aircraft, in the same combination.
I also noticed that there are both approved and unapproved RoTax 912’s out there. One of the guys this morning said he was flying the unapproved one so had to fly off 40 hours before he could take up a passenger, but no one seemed to know what the difference was in the engines. The only difference he came up with was a several thousand dollar higher price tag on the approved one!
I am building with the Jabiru 2200A, the latest version with hydraulic lifters, and using a Sensenich W62HJ-36 prop.
How do I go about finding out if this combination has FAA approval? I believe that combination does exist in some of the recently approved LSA that are coming on the market. Does that constitute approval?

I believe that if the airplane is inspected as ELSA, that the test period is up to the DAR ("at least 5 hours"....yes..only 5!).
Engine certification in this case doesn't mean the same thing. Although I *think* it must be at lease an LSA engine with a statement from the manufacturer to say it is ATSM compliant (like a Rotax or Jab)...or a regular certified engine.
Mine was registered expermental-amateur built. I did 40hrs test. ...and I was still tweaking after that.
