Listers,
Can someone provide the length of CH701 with tail removed? I need to get a trailer long enough to haul a completed airframe with tail and wings removed.

Many thanks,
Ken Arnold

Hi Ken,
I'd assume you're building a tri-gear, so a trailer needn't be longer
than 60% the length of the
plane. I had to make my bed wide enough for the gear, long enough to
allow a 4 to 5 foot overhang
in back and low enough to be able to pull it up and on. Wings were on
their own rack and trailered
separately. This trailer just fits in the right forward side of my
t-hangar and is about 15 ft long hitch to tail end.
It was a free-bee, but required a total rebuild of the bed and tongue.
I also added a winch, a jack stand
and 3 ramps. It doesn't go much past 50 mph with this arrangement, but
it works well enough.

If you need specific data and dimensions, I can take notes and get
them. Don't think the 701 has
a radically different gear footprint from a 601 HDS.

Ken
19 ft overall, with no prop ,rudder and horizontal stabiliser. Maybe other 701's would be longer. My unit is powered by a Subaru EA 81 .The rear of the motor is only about 4 inch's from the nose gear assembly.
Hope that helps

My 701 fuse measures 13 ' (156') from aft end of logerons to the forward wing bracket, this line 67" above the floor when on the wheels. Another 2' +/-from this forward bracket to the firewall rivet line.
I'm glad you asked because I have a couple of easy questions.
1. What engine should I buy to put on the front of this machine? I will just be flying for pleasure, and alone around the pasture. The problem is that I planned to take 2 or 3 years to build and by that time I would have sold a 160 acre parcel here in the Sierras, or at least work a jab 2200 into my budget, but the selling is going slower than expected and the building is going much faster than expected. Less than a year on the project now and waiting for the wings kit (last part save engine). Also finished up my 1200' pasture/strip and designed and built a 40' x 26' hanger (Son Brad drove most all the nails). I bought a harbor freight nail gun but it was more trouble than it was worth. Yep, some of it is junk, but you can't beat the price. Actually I like their palm mailer, light and easy to work.
I figured the Jab. 2200 would cost $15 K FWF--- Rotax 4 stroke $20K.-----What about The Rotax 2 stroke engines? I would like to keep it light.
Aren't the auto conversion heavy? I'm more of a farm shop equipment mechanic so I best buy an aircraft engine.
2. I forgot---get you next time.

Mil,
Many thanks for the measurements. Seems I will need about 20' trailer. The trip from Florida to North Carolina is about 900 miles.

Sounds like your 701 project is going nicely. I went through the engine analysis and got a head ache from all the data. I finally decided to get a Rotax 912 ULS for my 701. The Jab 3300 was considered but it gets its power at fairly high rpms. This is good for the Zodiac but not so good for STOL 701. I am told the STOL needs big prop with lots of torque turning less than 2800 rpm. This is especially true if you ever put floats on it.

I looked at Continental and Lycoming but they are very heavy for the 701. Auto conversions are also viable. If you are a mechanic you can do your own work. Anyway, after all this I decided the Rotax was best for my mission. They are costly but I think the value of your 701 will reflect its desirability. If you consider the 2 cycle engines, be aware of the shorter time between overhaul. The Rotax 582 is a great engine but has a relatively short TBO.

When I was in the decision making mode, I surveyed the Zenith list for comments. I received a lot of responses that helped. You might also survey the list for comments. There are a lot of different engine types being installed. The respondents can indicate if post installation support is adequate.

My mission will consist of local flying at the many private grass strips in my neighborhood. I am surely anxious to compare my take-off roll with Zenith's published 90' roll.

Thanks again Mil, keep us posted on your build progress.
Regards,
Ken Arnold

I used an 8 x 24 foot open trailer to move my plane and wings from California to Idaho -- 700+/- miles. All it cost was the trailer rental -- which is far cheaper than trying to purchase or build a unit that will not be used more than a couple of times. I crated the wings and tied the fuselage and engine down by strapping the landing gear to the trailer. Encountered some hellacious cross winds across Nevada, but did not sustain any damage. In case you want to know what the green is -- for weather protection the plane was wrapped with plastic, i.e., "Saran Wrap" that is used in the shipping industry.
I'll try to attach a photo.
Help, can anyone tell me how to attach a JPG photo to this format?
Mack,

Ken:
Thanks for the reply. Seems like the 582 might work if the gear ratio was such that it would turn a large prop at a low RPM. I notice there are numerous reduction gears available. There are probable persons out there on the list that have such a combination and I would like to hear their opinion. (Consider the 10' pole rule to be disabled). Actually there are possibly persons on the list that want to sell their 582 with such a transmission and large prop so they can put in a 3300 or 912.
A low TBO may be ok for me the way I see the situation now. What are we expecting from that engine, 200 or 300 hours ? How is the dependability during that period ?

I may be a bit ahead of myself but I have been looking into a capable trailer before starting to build. I want to be able to put a 701 into a Weekend Warrior such as this one, wings removed of course. http://www.warriormfg.com/Floorplan/08CR-flpln-lg.gif

I hope to have the nose gear go up on a centerline ramp so as to clear the tail thru the 7' cargo entrance.

Can anyone provide the tip of spinner to center of nose gear dim?

The wife and I want to be snowbirds and have living quarters and trans for the 701 all in one package. There is a county campground in the desert of San Diego County that is open only during winter. There is a county maintained 2500' asphalt runway across the street from it that no one (but me it seems) ever uses. It is L54 and the campground is also named Agua Caliente.
Thanks....[/u]

Hey, I've stayed at that camp site and never realized there was an airstrip
so near. Thanks! I'll add it to my list of future strips to visit.

I wonder why the strip is there?

701flyer,

I have done some CAD work to see if I could get the 701 into a 24' Ryder truck. There is no problem at all. Plus, there is some room to spare. I have done just what you are wanting to do. I will build a ramp for the nose gear before the tail gets inside, and the way the Ryders are made the nose gear can set down in a saddle for the trip (since the door is lower than the roof)

If you want I can try to send you a DXF, DWG, TCW, PRT, etc... formatted file of some crude drawings.

Good Luck with building!!!!!
