I am in the process of wiring my panel. I bought a small 3 outlet avionics fan and am trying to figure out where to mount it and where to run the tubes. My avionics include 2 Chelton screens (sans GADHRS -#$%&!), 2 SL30s, GTX330, PM8000, AFS3400. None of state the need for a fan or have a connection for the tube.

What recommendations can you make?

The GTX330 does have a place for a fan tube to mount. I have
a fan, but have yet to connect the air tubes. Right now it's
just circulating air around, blowing downward, while the
hot air is rising upwards. I'm too lazy to finish the job
right now. It's mounted on one of the longitudinal panel ribs,
in the forward secton of the upper forward fuselage...mine is
on the copilot side. The other side's rib is also where I
mounted things like the stall horn. You could make a flange
and try to connect it to the Chelton screens and the GTX330
has the mount, but I haven't found them to have issues since
they have their own fans. I wouldn't worry about the SL30/
definitely not about the PMA8000. Don't know about the AFS3400.
If they don't say they need them, I'd skip it unless you can
easily make it work. Make sure you're now blowing air into
an exhaust exit fan.

Hi Tim,

I must have missed it but which fan are you using and where did you find it?

I'm not sure the name of the one I got, but as Dan said, Stein sells
it. Mine is that nice 3-port Dan referred to.

I found deals on avionics and defrost fans at CompuUSA or any other computer
parts store. Nice 2 or 3 fan units on mounting plates (12v) that do a great
job. $9.99 each.

Are you sure you know what we mean by acutal avionics fans? They're
a blower design, with 3 output tubes of about 5/8-3/4" so you can
attach hoses that go on flanges on the avionics.

If the goal is just to replace a muffin fan on an item, then yeah,
there are lots of cheap fans that do the job. Do buy ball bearing
though.

The avionics fans are different. They're still overpriced, but
they're not just a cheap flat muffin fan.

No, I guess I wasn't sure what "we" meant by avionics fans. And who are
"we?" I only noticed one question. Is there some secret cabal of
experienced builders that are all "in the know," or are we all learning as
we go?

Thanks for letting me know.

Nope, no secret order of RV-10'ers. Just that Jesse and I both
replied to that one...and my first reply was right behind his.
The avionics fans we (Jesse and I) were talking about were
specifically made for avionics, and I believe they even
carry some type of certification if I remember right.

Ahh see now, Jesse was talking about the flange but it was I who posted
the comment about Stein and then you jumped in making the we....does it
really matter who the we is, as long as you have a builder number, or an
interest in flying you are part of we!

Wow, I am glad that got clarified. I didn't remember writing about the
avionics fan, although I did think about it and agree with Tim (Tim, you can
still include me in that "we" even if I didn't reply). I may have written,
but don't remember. Now I am trying to figure out what flange thing I wrote
about. Man, this list sure keeps me on my toes. I hope it was a good post.

On the fan, though, some avionics (radio stack items in my experience) have
a little round port in the back of the tray that is designed for a cooling
hose from some kind of blower source. The little Ameriking fans that I use
really work well and aren't too expensive. The hose that comes with them is
garbage, IMHO, but the flexible conduit that Van's sells works great.

Now, on the flange thing. I will just assume that I was supposed to have
posed on the deburring issue. If so, I probably would have said something
to the effect of, "we use the scotchbrite wheel for everything that we can
maneuver around the bench grinder on its little non-bench stand. It gives
such a nice poloshed burr-free edge that I haven't seen anything that even
comes close. Watch out that you have a good grip on your part, though,
especially if you have a new part, because it can 'grab and fling' if you
catch it the wrong way. That little hooky-thingy-tool works great for
getting where the wheel won't get, and a good old-fashioned file works great
on the skins." Now I specifically remember not ever writing this before,
but I may have written about something else.

Well, off to bed. Another long day tomorrow.

Ahhh, thanks for reminding me it was you, Dan, and sorry Jesse. Smile
I've got the green slime headcold this week so I'm not
really focused on anything I'm doing. Good thing it's not
time for me to be assembling the plane. Smile

My comment was tongue in cheek, because the real importance is not who
posted it, rather that it was posted so that everyone will be able to
know about it. I do not like when people play the I have a secret thing,
and the thing I like best about the list is the free sharing of idea's.
Fuse interior is getting painted this week, and final install of
everything begins. At least I hope that is what is happening.
