Drew,
I hate to pee on anybodys parade but if this is where my membership dollars are going I'll pass. Do we REALLY need a coin Drew? There are a bunch of places money could be better spent to serve the Red Star Pilot membership.

Always Yakin,
Doug

News From The RedStar Pilots Association

Check this out!!

The RedStar Unit Challenge Coin
Have you renewed for 2007??
If you did not renew for 2007, membership expired Jan 1st! Please head to www.flyredstar.org and renew by clicking the "become a member" link right on the home page. You can renew through a paper mail in application, but it's cheaper and easier for us all when done online.
Challenge Coins Are Here for 2007!!
The concept of a Unit Challenge Coin is a long tradition in the Armed Forces and has spread to non military organizations as well (Police, SWAT, Fire Department, etc.) and we've recently sent the RedStar Pilots Association's mock up for our own coin to be minted.
The basic tradition of the unit coin is simple; keep it on hand at all times, it represents membership in the organization, if for any reason, voluntary or by accident, a coin is produced and struck or tapped against anything solid (as in the case it were to be inadvertantly dropped), this signifies a "coin check" of all present within earshot. Those members unable to produce their coin are obliged to buy the round for those who do. Tradiationally your unit coin can not be drilled or fastened with a permenante ring or other retainer for string or necklace, it needs to be retained in its original condition except for personal identification (some folks etch their call signs in to the coin).
All our coins (1.75 inches) will carry the unit insignia on the front and a formation of of our most popular aircraft in detail raised relief on the back and are multi-colored and numbered. If our jet aircraft membership rises in 2007 a coin will be struck with a differant back, but the front will always retain the unit insignia of the association. Clinic/Fly-in organizers will be issued the coins for re-sale at events at a break even cost of around $8-10.00 each based on final production fees. And soon afterward they will be avaialble to "members only" through the store.
Your Parade Formation Qualification
We are working to finish up the new Formation Training Folders and Solo Formation Training Cards. These are tools for the student of formation and the clinic instructor to improve our clinic training. Wing, Lead candidates and Instructors will see these tools, and explanation of their use, at clinics in 2007. Along with an updatred manual the RPA will have some excellent training tools for some time to come. Another item on our list for "The Year In Training" is a record of your accomplishments in pursuit of your formation skills. We've designed exceptionally nice certificates for Four Ship Wingman-in-Training Solo criteria and of course the Wing and Flight Lead Certificate for successful completion of your practical test/check ride. These are being professionally produced for mounting on a hero wall in your den or in the hangar. I will make these available for all those that now currently hold the wing or lead rating, probably through the clinics and fly-ins.

Selling a Yak, CJ, L-29 or Cessna?...or are you looking to buy an Eastern Block aircraft?
Take a look at the new member aircraft sales section at www.flyredstar.org . Before we all get a bit carried away screaming about how this might be a dumb idea or not. You will  be buying these coin/s thus they are supposed to be a small income generator or at least pay for themselves not an expense . Now I think if the RPA membership thinks this is a stupid idea and no one wants them  we should each email Drew individually and let him know. Rants on a list are easy to ignore while a pile of individual emails are not. It also eliminates a bunch of repetitive emails all on the same subject that have really  nothing to do with our planes or flying coming through all our emails.

I like the Coin Idea. And even if I didn’t I would buy one to support the hard work and effort the individuals put into this community.

If I REALLY didn’t like It I would buy one and then offer a suggestion of something better to do that might accomplish the desired goals…. And what might a coin accomplish…??? A sense community, comradery, and spirit…. At least it would be memorabilia I can talk to my kids and grandkids about someday.

You can, in minutes, post your aircraft for sale and it will display to all folks, member or vistor, who browse the website. See who's selling their warbird with complete stats, price and pictures - just click on the thumbnail photos for expanded coverage of the sale offer. We have put a prominent link on the home page soon, and you can find it right now under "Services" option of the main navigation bar. Post your for-sales at flyredstar...

Troops,

I guess I need to take some of the heat of this coin business. I was the board member who recommended this. First, I have received a number of the coins from different outfits as tokens of appreciation for something I did or just being a nice guy. The Lima Lima pilots gave me one at ICAS and the Air Force Master Chiefs gave me one. I really appreciated receiving them but with them of course, comes the traditions that Drew pointed out.

Who gives them out? Just about all the best outfits around. Special units and squadrons in the different services mostly. From Navy Seals to Air Force One. Lately even police/fire departments have started issuing them. I would like to think RPA ranks in there somewhere. The coins costs, to me, are nothing to what they mean or try to convey to other members. They are meant to be a keepsake.

There are already collectors out there vying for them already. Who knows, maybe in 100 years your great-great-great child, will discover your coin in some forgotten box, and become a billionaire (due to inflation) allowing them to take a quite trip to Mars for a holiday.

Drew,
I hate to pee on anybodys parade but if this is where my membership dollars are going I'll pass. Do we REALLY need a coin Drew? There are a bunch of places money could be better spent to serve the Red Star Pilot membership.
Always Yakin,
Doug
