Bob,

I haven't made the strut fairings yet. Waiting until the plane is assembled. They are made of aluminum. They are more or less pre-bent. They still have to be pulled around and riveted. This is for an 801. I don't know if 701's have them. I don't see why they couldn't be fabricated. There should be a picture of them in the 801 part of the Zenith website. I just got them so I wouldn't have round tubes showing. Mainly just for looks and so I could spend some more money. They are an option. Not included in the kit.

Dave

I knew if I waited long enough someone would give me an answer I wanted.

Thank You Sir

Hi Bill,

I see what you mean. I think a lot of the squabbles that get started on this list are due to misunderstandings. When you have to try to interpret what another person or persons mean by only being able to read it, it is difficult. Speaking on my own behalf I am here because I can use the help from others that have gone before me, maybe try to help some with what I know, and most of all, just for the fun of it. I try not to get caught up in the moment during some of the discussions. Sometimes I just need a break from it all. It's been fun getting to know others on this list and I do learn a lot. I don't know where I'm going with this, but I will say, anyone can say what they want to me on this list. We all have that right. (This is the part where the fireworks start and someone starts sing the national anthem). All the time I've spent messing around on the computer tonight I could have made and remade at least a couple of parts.

there are actually several good aluminum to aluminum adheasives. it is not cheap though. I have several different kinds depending on flexibility after setting, and yes they are used on certified airplanes. The Traveler and Tiger by Gruman use bonded wings, no rivets.

Hi guys, I am a new subscriber. My intent is to build a 601XL either corvair or 0-200 powered. For Dave: I used to own a Thorp T-18 and had two 2" covers on the bottom of the aircraft "glued" on with silicon. I have had the aircraft up to 210MPH and they stayed on!

Dave-
The problem is, you can never tell when someone's serious and when they're adding a tongue in cheek comment. I'm as guilty as any in this respect.
A couple of years ago there was a string re: fitting fiberglass end ribs. You know, the ones that you mount position lights to. One lister was worried about what to do about a 1/4" gap between the wing skin and the fiberglass. Another lister said "1/4" isn't bad, I had 3/4" and just filled it in with bondo."
I 'm sure you get my point. I also agree, you can't live without a heated workshop. It's hard enough getting myself out to polish without having to microwave the Nuvite first!

Hi Bill,

I agree with D. all of the above.

I've been watching the polishing episode to see what really works. I have thought about polishing just the slats on the 801, but I have plenty of time to decide that. I had a polished Ercoupe a few years ago. It came that way. It seemed to stay looking good for quite a while. I sold it to a couple of guys that were going to learn to fly in it. Last I heard about all they did was polish it. It did look good. On a hot sunny day I think you cold get a sunburn by just standing next to it.

Extreme Adhesives makes a complete line of adhesives that will meet any requirement you may be looking for in Aluminum to Aluminum bonding.

The link below will take you to their comparison chart for materials and strength of bonding.

A nice paper on the virtues of Adhesive Bonding over Mechanical Bonding can be found at the link below.
This is part of an aerospace industry study.

Hey Dave, maybe these would do the job without bonding on metal disks?

Hello, we have build many racecar chassis (years ago when the used to be alloy or alloy honeycomb) and now in Carbon and we have used Scotch Weld 9323 B/A with big sucsess also no problem with aging as planes get far older then race cars.
This glue also is of good strenght if you have to fill up small gaps.
also very good in high temp (just incase you would like to fly very fast Very Happy Very Happy )
we made several tests on torsion stiffnes and this product had the best results. when cured off completly rivets have more or less no need anymore.
very important is clean surface and achted before (scotchbrite etc)
happy bonding
