I have a 912s on my 701. Where I consider it necessary is when loaded. The difference in lightly loaded vs heavy loaded is huge, even at near sealevel altitudes.Climb rate/angle is affected dramatically, more so than takeoff distance. As was said in one of the related posts density altitude/gross weight is the determining factor here. I had planned on summer ops in mountain areas and while it will be doable it will have to be done with particular care and won't be a casual undertaking. For my ops anyway I consider the 912s essential, disadvantages be damned.
