I figured I would weigh in with my thinking on this
subject as well. Firstly, keep in mind that I am not
flying yet, I am still building.
Right from the start of my 701 project I figured that
I would either go with a good used 912UL or a new
912ULS. My hope was that I would find a deal on a
used 80 hp engine that would be too good to pass up.
Failing that, if I had to go brand new, the couple of
thousand dollars difference in price would be well
worth it for the 100hp 912ULS.
I did find a pretty good deal on a 912UL. It was from
a CH-701 wrecked in a landing accident. It also came
with a bunch of additional parts like a basic panel
and a repairable cowl. I'm quite happy with the deal
so far but the engine is not installed and running on
my plane yet. The final financial test will be once
everything is installed and running.
Will the 80hp engine be my permanent choice? I don't
know. I am planning on going with floats at some
point so I might eventually install a 100hp engine.
I'll deal with this when I get there. It won't likely
be for several additional years.
