I've looked at the archives on fuel tank problems and fixes and I gather
Skystars last fuel tanks where built using a vinyl ester resin.Has
anyone using that tank experienced problems with auto fuel and the
additives?I've pulled the 13 gal.tanks on my 1992 IV 1050 and I'm
concidering buying Johns new tanks and I'd like to continue to use auto

I did not build my plane but I think my tanks are exactly what you are talking about and they have always had auto fuel or mogas as I call it in them and been no trouble at all. I can't tell you though if they have been sloshed except the fact they are a straw colour to see the fuel level through the end of the tank and so it is difficult. This makes me wonder if it's sloshing causing this but I don't know. It just seems to me that if all tanks are so hard to see the fuel level through then there needs to be another solution.

G'day John, I also had problems with my glass tanks and posted pictures of the factory defects on Sports Flight. What I did to resolve my problems was to remove each tank and recover them with epoxy and then slosh each. Turned out great and no problems to date. I was fortunate in that I was rebuilding the wings at the time so the tanks were easy to remove. I did establish however that you can remove the tanks from the wing without having to remove the inner wing rib as has been advise here from time to time. Each end of the tank sits on a bed of silicon which with patience can be removed and the tank slipped out. Its a tight fit and you may get a bit of pressure placed on the under wing fabric but they will come out.

Hi there, Has anybody ever designed or built add-on auxiliary fuel tanks? I have only got a pair of 6 gal fuel tanks and planning a long flight to Oshkosh this summer and it would be nice to have an extra few gallons of fuel on board? Any Idea's out there?

Hey Jim,

I brought up this topic recently and suggested I might do the same .
I was thinking of a 5 to 10 gal tank right behind the seat. Also making a larger baggage compartment as well.
Perhaps make a exterior access door as well.
For the record I have carried 6 Imp Gals behind the seat on occasion which is about 45 lbs inclding containers. Plus another 30 pounds of bagger ther as well so I think 10 gal tank against the back of seat would most likely work out w & B wise.

Definatly a possiblilty.

You could use a tank strapped to the bottom of the fuselage similar to the cargo pod. When you run low of fuel in the wings just pump gas into the wings through a "T" in the gas line with a hand pump. A similar system to this was used by the flying gas cans we used to see passing through here on their way to Europe via the Azores. The nice thing is you could remove the tank quickly to save carrying excess weight on local flights. It will probably slow the plane down a bit but gees the 'Fox is going to be slow anyway.

My plane has a small stowage compartment behind the seat, accessible from the outside, rated by the original builder for 50 Lb. I have a hard time getting 10Lb survival/first aid kit in it. I also have a small box mounted overhead on the right side of the cockpit for very small items... Gas strainer..plugs and plug wrench etc...

I can carry up to 30Gal U.S. in my float compartments. Only problem is I have to land to transfer it to the main tanks.

I think the belly pod idea is best because you can position it right at the CG and remove it, when not needed. If you are into spending a winter working on the wings I'm sure John McBean, Kitfox LLC. will be happy to provide you with 13 Gal wing tanks.

Another idea is to install two small temporary tanks, similar to those used on some small UL, high on the wing struts. you will be able to get gravity flow from these tanks but you will need to have shut off valves for them so fuel from the main tanks won't cause them to overflow. If mounted high on the strut there will be less load on the struts and the fuselage.

To state the obvious... Any of these things could cause the plane to behave "differently".

They have football shaped auxiliary tanks that they attach to some ultralights .
You might be able to attach them to your struts .

Hi Dave,Noel, and Kem, I was thinking of finding a 12 gal plus fuel tank that would fit nicely on the passenger seat? Not sure if that would be high enough to gravity feed the header, if not it could be pumped in I guess? Jim

Jim,
Could you replace the header tank with just a larger tank behind the seat ?
Would be a shame to lose a pssenger seat to a fuel tank .

I put a aluminum 9 gal. aux. tank in my Avid. It was purchased at an
off-road supply store for $99, and was light weight. It also had the fill
cap and pipe fittings already welded in. It is built to take rough off
roading and installed easily by attaching it to the tubing already a part of
the fuselage.

It is cyndrical in shape and supprisingly small (for holding nine ga.).

Now, don't do as Michel Gordillo who flew his Kitfox from Madrid to
Oshkosh, with a fuel tank instead of his right hand seat, until the
Russians wanted him to take a navigator over Siberia! Smile

Cheers,

Marco,

No but I am looking to put a tank right behind the seat.
I have 2 6 gal wing tanks now and a 8.5 gal front tank and another 10 gals would be nice when on floats and remote.

Will you be able to do that without cutting fabric? I have 2x 6 gal wing tanks and 1 gal behind the seat header. Would sure like another 5-6 gal near the CG without cutting fabric.
