Having just completed the test flying programme for PFA approval with a Woodcomp "Varia" 1700mm mechanically adjustable VP propeller on my Trigear with Rotax 912S, I would be very interested to hear some performance figures for other types of VP and constant speed propellers (no bull**** please!), so that comparisons can be made. I have this prop on sale or return from the UK agent, so can go to another model if necessary. The Woodcomp "Varia" has 2 scimitar blades and is adjusted by means of a simple cable arrangement in the cockpit and weighs no more than the Warpdrive it replaces. So far we are very pleased with the smoothe and quiet operation, an increase of 10 knots in cruising speed and better take-off performance - but how does it match the more exotic beasts? I hope you can assist.

Brian,
I'm sure that William Mills will give you chapter-and-verse.
But can you publish here your performance figures (including fuel burn if available) plus geometry of prop (diameter and twist distribution).
I have a number of figures collected over the years from details that have been published by others. I'll dig them out, but they don't relate specifically to variable pitch props.

My two pennyworth for a ground-adjustable Warp Drive (parallel blade type) in an XS Trigear with 912S. Pitch angles set to 21.4 degrees.
1. Conditions:
- 1150 lb weight
- QNH 1016
- Temp at ground level 5 deg C
- Test conducted at 3000 feet
2. Performance
- max static rpm: 4920
- max rpm in level flight: 5700
- cruise IAS vs RPM:
4800: 115kts
5000: 120
5200: 124
5400: 128
5500: 131
5700: 136
- time taken to climb from 3000' to 4000':
100kts: 65 sec
90kts: 65 sec
80kts: 65 sec
70kts: 55 sec
(these were all very approx as I used a wrist watch not a stop watch)
-takeoff distance and fuel consumption not measured but for anyone able to share data please include this if you have it.
What blade pitch is anyone else using for ground adjustable Warp Dirive props?
Safe flying.

I have virtually the same set up with 912S, wide chord WD at 21.5 degrees. But not trigear.
For about the same weight, climb figures are all virtually the same, except best climb is just over 80kts and all of the speeds are about 12kts quicker. 5800rpm produces more than Vne (150).
Recent addition of cold air has increased the static rpm and climb, plus knocked c10% of the fuel burn, surprisingly.

Willie
Many thanks for your Warpdrive figures. We have never coarsened ours from the recommended Europa starting point of 19 degrees because the take-off performance from short grass strips was already, in my view, not great. At this pitch setting the max static was 5220 rpm and max level flight speed 134 kias but with throttle retarded to maintain 5800 rpm. Our cruising speed at 4800 was 109-113kias, the better figures gained when the c of g was rearwards with luggage (usually 2 folding bikes), and fuel burn fairly solid at 15 litres per hour. We did a series of climbs from 1000 to 2000 feet, in very similar conditions and weight to you and found that best climbing speed for height was 80 kias (1 minute 2 seconds, as opposed to 1.05 at 75 kias and 1.13 at 70 kias). Interestingly, neither the Warpdrive or the Woodcomp Varia seem to "unload" from static, the Woodcomp giving us 5740 rpm throughout take-off and initial climb. I will publish a full set of figures once we have the mod approval and can play at length.
