Hi All,
I've just finished a new panel (aluminium) for a LongEz and I have to decide what colour to paint it. I know it's not strictly an electrical decision, but in terms of it being the visual pinnacle of all the electrical work behind it, I want a colour that works ergonomically and aesthetically.
I'm leaning towards something other than black, but something too colourful. Perhaps a charcoal blue?
Any advice?

I did mine a sort of warm light grey. Â Looks good, not too overwhelming, and black lettering stands out nicely too.

Bill,
You don’t have to do paint. Wood veneer can make a very attractive panel. This is my Europa:

And this is the panel I’m building for my Little Toot Sport Biplane:

These are done in a very plain light wood. Veneers are available in darn near any wood, grain, color you’d like. Rockler Woodworking has an extensive selection ( rockler.com/wood/veneer ). You can also search at Amazon.com for an amazing selection of wood veneers. And there are probably other woodworking and wood supply sites as well. Many are available in adhesive back otherwise they require contact cement for application.
Just an idea for something a little different.

If you do wood, be sure it's sealed with some type of UV blocking finish, & use something other than typical contact cement or the peel & stick stuff to attach it. My 22 yr old RV-4 has wood veneer on the panel, & it's in pretty bad shape. The problems had already started when I bought the plane, when it was ~10 yrs old. The wood's dried out & cracking, adhesive is releasing, & pieces are missing.

Bill,
I agree with Bob Borger regarding using wood grain as your panel's backing.
eBay vendors sell self-stick wood grain looking plastic film, along with fake self-sticking carbon fiber "glue on"
material. I do NOT recommend using self-sticking glue on product for you panel. The reason is the huge differences
that your panel's temperature will always undergo. Hot days produce lots of little bubbles that aren't there on cold days.
I bought some of the walnut grained glue-on stuff. Looked beautiful, did a fairly good job of putting it on. Bubbles
showed up when the panel got warmer. Had to tear it off. Save your money on the glue-on film!
I highly recommend what Bob Borger suggests regarding using "real" wood veneer (if you want a wood grain look)!!
But, make darn sure you roll all the air out of it, as you glue it down, otherwise it, too, will de-laminate in the heat..
Watch a few Youtube videos on how to apply veneers, formica, laminates, etc. First, you roll or brush on an even, smooth
layer of contact cement on each surface, and let it air dry for a couple of minutes until it's barely tacky to your fingers.
Then you place the veneer above the panel, separated by a few parallel thin "separator" sticks of wood. Next,
begin joining the two surfaces at one edge by one-at-a-time removing a stick, and rolling out the air along one edge,
and continue working your way across the surface, removing the separator sticks as you go. Practice on scrap first!!!!!!!!
When you begin touching those two surfaces of contact cement together, there's no going back!!! I tore up a $180 piece
of formica finding this out. You don't get a second chance to apply veneer or laminates correctly. Practice on something
else until you get the hang out it.
Another good looking finished product would be genuine carbon fiber (overlaid on your aluminum plate). You wouldn't need
very much. It comes in colors. Check out eBay's selection. Do NOT consider the 'glue-on' crap either!!! Same with the
veneer, there's tons of Youtube videos of how to apply the CF to a solid backing. Once you do all of your cutting and holes,
just prior to adding instruments, you'd give it one last clear coat and buff and polish it.
Personally, I prefer the wood look over the carbon fiber, but that's just my preference. A few years ago, there
was a guy in northern California named Pleuger that "painted" a wood grain look on custom aircraft panels. They
were awesome!!! I'm not sure if he is still in business, or if Aircraft Spruce bought him out, or what. Here is ACS's
reference to his products. If he is still in business, this is how I'd go.

In Europe for wet paint (or power for that matter) we use a lot of RAL colour codes … You can Google it … Here is one that I like .

I used flat Polar Grey - a Poly Fiber colour (that's Polar Grey with a flatener in it)

Neal,
The wood is probably about 20 thousands of an inch thick. I bought the material from the Wood Werks Supply, it is also available on line. The veneer was pre glued peel and stick and I have had no problems with delaminating.

This is the aeroplane with the Advanced box in it - same panel colour - in fact the other might be a slightly different shade ...
Not a wonderful photo - but gives you an idea of the paint colour under natural light (is definitely Polar Grey)

Photographers will tell you that on average of the colours in a natural scene is 18% gray (unless you're shooting at snow for example)... hence they use an 18% "grey card" to calibrate scene lighting.
It doesn't have to be exact, but personally I don't think you can go far wrong with an 18% grey panel, which gives pretty good contrast with most other colours. My panel is only primed at the moment, but the entire cockpit will be the colour of the cover in the photo.

The USAF used that 18% neutral grey, or maybe a bit lighter, in all the aircraft I was associated with while I was in. I believe the US Navy uses the same or a similar grey. Don’t know about the US Army.

Thanks for the info. I assume it was in a flat finish. Do you know what color and size text was used for labeling? I assume they did research to determine what what was best, no reason to reinvent the wheel.

Hi All,
I've just finished a new panel (aluminium) for a LongEz and I have to decide what colour to paint it. I know it's not strictly an electrical decision, but in terms of it being the visual pinnacle of all the electrical work behind it, I want a colour that works ergonomically and aesthetically.
I'm leaning towards something other than black, but something too colourful. Perhaps a charcoal blue?
Any advice?

I’d call the finish a semi-gloss. Not truly flat but not shiny. Labeling was black, in a simple san-serif, Something like this 14pt Arial Rounded MT Bold. The later aircraft went to grey over a translucent plastic that was back or edge lit and the text was either screened out or removed in some way so that the illumination showed through the text. That was a nice panel. Other folks have described a similar panel type that can be done today from the right vendor.
