My hangar partners young daughter broke off my pitot tube flush with the leading edge of the wing… Any suggestions on the easiest way to fix this?
I know I could cut an inspection hole on the underneath side of the wing and get at it that way (more work than I really want to do right now). Has anyone successfully re-attached a tube by cutting around the remaining tube in the wing with a dremel and then coupling that to the extension? Much like those of you that have the short stub extending out of the wing and then a rubber tube connecting to the extension. Only in this case the rubber tube would actually extend into the leading edge of the wing.

Take note that there are aircraft in the GA ranks that have the pitot flush with the leading edge. I would fly it around the pattern and see if there is any difference.

Tim,
The diameter is not critical. Epoxy a smaller diameter tube inside the piece that is left in the wing. Trim it to about 1” outboard of the wing, then fit another rubber coupling and extend the pitot to the desired length.

Good idea! I would also carry a GPS on that flight! Ground speed from a GPS would be better than no speed at all!

My pitot tube actually ends inside the wing with a rubber hose
coupling it to the separate tube outside. That makes it easy to
replace a bent pitot tube. You could open up the skin around the
broken tube, slide a rubber hose over it and stick a new piece of
tubing in.

A pitot tube flush with the leading edge can be expected to produce
larger airspeed reading errors than one that sticks out. The further
it sticks out, the smaller are the errors.

If it were my repair I would try using a very thin piece of aluminum or brass tubing that would just slide over the outside of the original pitot. Cut some small grooves in one end of that to use as a cutting edge and turn it like a drill bit until it works/cuts its way into the wing and around the broken off pitot. Cut the part that now sticks out of the wing to a length that you can use to slide the original outside piece of pitot inside of that. Either glue in place or use a piece of rubber hose to hold in place so that it is flexible and won't break again.
