Gents:
thank you all for the contributions. I have the auto plug harness on. this is not the original Chinese harness anymore. I have replaced the suspected bad lead and the suspected bad plug and the mag cap. Still cold on only one cylinder (#1) on mag 2. I am not sure how an air leak would cause the front plug to fail but allow the rear plug to fire.
thanks, Gil

Have you checked the other 8 cylinders to make sure they are all firing on the questionable mag?

Gill,
Most mag switches on the CJ's AND Yaks are wired where #2 mag is the right mag which fires the rear plugs. In other words, when the mag switch is on #2 the right mag is firing and when in the #1 position, the left mag is firing.

To confirm this, remove the P lead from the right mag and place your ohm meter on the P lead. It should show a ground when the mag switch is in the OFF and #1 position.  If it does, you replaced the wire from the wrong mag.

I should have added, the #1 mag, which is the left mag, fires the front plugs.

Based on everything you said and what your symptoms are, this is the only thing that makes any sense. So verify the mag switch and p leads are set up #1 = left mag and #2 = right mag.

Gil,

Have you checked the plug itself for a bent electrode or shorted electrode, wire connection in the mag cap or cracked mag cap?

Darn good suggestion! It is very easy to get which mag fires which plug confused, and it would explain a heck of a lot! Good one Dennis.

This is just a crazy thought;

I don't know when you did the auto spark conversion. When I did mine I had 3 lines or so that did not pierce well so when I checked them on the ohm meter I got nothing. I think you said you did check the continuity, however to do that you are bending the distributor cap and wires up. Perhaps the connection is OK when there is that extra tension on the plug wire and then when you put the cap on, that tension is relieved and the connection fails....

In any case, I'm sure we're all curious to hear the culprit.
