Hi Fred
If you want it to ‘happen’ in the amp meter then you need a great thick wire all the way to and from the amp meter. Heavy and best avoided in my view.
I think Graham means a short bit of wire with known resistance.
Presumably one could connect a resistance in parallel down at the battery and get the data across that? No sure of the maths on that idea but is should be possible and would be fail safe.

What I meant was to measure the voltage drop across the length of the main buss from
the battery to where the alternator feeds in. You will get +ve or _ve readings according to
charging or discharging. A small milliameter will work and can be callibrated in Amps.
