Hi,
We use Michelin S83 tires on our 601 HDS, mounted on old-style
motor scooter wheels that are not split. Mounting the tire is not
so difficult except for inserting the inner tube valve stem into the stem hole
of the wheel. It is a pain because it is hard to reach into the tire and push
the 90 degree valve stem through the hole.
The following procedure makes that step easy.
Take a spare valve cap, say from the old inner tube,
and drill a small hole into the bottom of the cap.
Take safety wire, say 6 in. length. Tie a knot into the wire at one
end. Pull the wire through the valve cap so that the knot is on the
inside of the cap and cannot be pulled through the cap even if you pull
quite hard. Put a small washer into the cap on top of the knot.
When you are ready to place the inner tube into the tire, thread the
wire through the stem hole of the wheel. Start from the outside
of the wheel, with cap first. Screw the cap onto the
valve stem of the inner tube until the stem bottoms
out on the washer. Place the inner tube into the tire. Once the stem
is inside the tire, pull gently but firmly on the wire, all the while
wiggling the inner tube, until the valve stems appears and can be
pulled through the hole.
Happy flying,
Klaus

Hi there,
The tubes you place within the S83 tires are delicate to say the least, so I recommend you place
a rubber washer over the stem to protect the tube from the sharp edge of the wheel. I experienced twice
having a flat at the tube stem because of a sharp wheel opening. See the links below for perspective.

Your wheels might be different, but I thought it might save you grief.
