Hi all,
Anyone wish to share their 2 cents worth on any issues had with wing tank fuel level senders?
I am looking at installing VDO 10-180 Ohm senders in the end plates but wonder if they may be prone to fuel leakage through the connector terminal stud or anywhere else in the actual sender assembly?
Also I imagine with the senders mounted right at the root of the tank, you wouldn't get any other indication other than full until quite a bit of fuel had been used?

Yup! Your exactly right. I have 2 (one in each tank) electronic senders for fuel level. At 6 gallons I show full tanks on the EFIS. What I did is to put that level in the yellow (approx 3 hrs flight time) and made a dipstick that registers 10 to 13 gallons for checking fuel at the fill cap. Not too much to do other than that. It works out well for me-not perfect but gives plenty of warning. Hope this helps. Cheers, Larry Pulsar III N852LW

Matt,
Kits from about 1996 came out with capacitance fuel level senders mounted on the end plates. Some people have had a problem with intermittent readings with the earlier versions of these senders. I had to replace mine a couple of years ago. The new models seem fine. With the capacitance tube extending into the tank, and angled up to the top skin it is possible to get good readings up to about 28 litres. No problems with leakage if installed carefully with good sealant.

Is anyone using automotive/ marine style resistance with float type senders, and can share their experience with those?

Matt,
Why don't you put in a flow meter it records how much you are
consuming how much you have used and on the flow rate how much is left, best
thing with a dihedral wing, you could have a steam gauge to remind you that
it is physically nearly empty, best thing since bubble gum.

Hi Matt,
I installed some resistance style senders that I think I got from AS&S many years ago. I reduced the arm length to make better use of the entire resistance track so that I get ‘full’ and ‘empty’ on the fuel gauge. Of course, they don’t read the top couple of gallons in the tank, but I’m not concerned that that fraction, it’s the last gallon or two that I am worried about! Mine read accurately all the way down to the last half gallon. Photo attached. These have worked well for the last 18 years or so.

I don't trust any fuel gauge,,, even the ones in our FBO's Cessnas.
I known how much fuel I burn per hour. I fill my tanks before every
flight. I have a panel mounted clock. I switch tanks every half hour.
My bladder limits my flight time to three or three and a half hours,
at which time I have at least five gallons reserve.
Works for me.

The physiological aspects of fuel use and bladder capacity is an angle I haven't put much time into yet.......
Otherwise.........anyone had other types of leaks.....with automotive fuel senders in the end panels?.............
