Yup, it is me again. I promise, last rant of the day. Well, I hope.

Anyway, wanted to talk about the side exhaust that some people have on their CJs. Note: I owned 1 for a couple of years and a couple of hundred hours. I liked it. It sounded better but was extremely loud in the cockpit. Without ANR the sound was unBEARable [sic] [pun intended]. I still liked it. When flying airshows, the crowd liked the noise.

However there are some other drawbacks with the system that you should know about if you have it or want to install it.

1. It is a long, vibrating, metal tube that hangs on your engine Cyl.
2. It will occasionally need welding at the joints due to above
3. You CAN NOT mount/attach the back end to your airplane it makes cracking worse.
4. It WILL burn/rub against the side of your CJ where it comes out from the engine compartment
5. Even if you add a SS plate, it will burn/rub against it. Check behind the exhaust after 100 hours.
6. You need to insure that the donuts and connection nuts (rings) are tight on the CYL exhaust ports. You should check with a wrench every couple of hours. If you don’t as the exhaust vibrates it loosens. it changes the shape of the donut and then begins to grind the CYL. I didn’t check it as often as I should and after about 700 hours at least 6 of my CYLs would need to be fixed.

To number 6 above, you should do that for the standard exhaust as well and is extremely important.

I’m NOT trying to bad mouth the side exhaust. It is cool, it is loud, I LIKED IT!

However, if you have it, it needs to be watched, it needs a little more maintenance than the standard exhaust. I raise this issue along with others because as a community we need to keep talking about what we are seeing. We need to be honest and help the folks that have been in the community a while along with those new to keep flying safe. I offer it as my opinion, you decide on what is good for you.

Respectfully,
Bear
