"  own the free air and am told that the rear cylinder will overheat on a KOLB." Have you confirmed this through operation ? Assumptions following are based on a cooling shroud of some sort, not just naked cylinders. Broke a belt on my Hirth with fan shroud facing forward in 100 degree weather..... got a 40 degree rise on both front and rear. As long as you can manage your ground operation times and can get airflow started soon after reaching a minimum operating temperature of, say, 200f, you'd probably be just fine. Not I. Have never sold any of my "UL" stuff. I'm just perplexed why it won't work on a Kolb. If the shroud directs air to the front cylinder, why not the rear? Both have equal access to the incoming stream. The intake is offset to the side of the cylinders and creates an intake plenum. Shoot, my Hirth was in worse shape, having to direct the front cylinder air over the rear cylinder before exhausting and didn't have a problem. Your bird, do what makes you comfortable.  Cheers! I have a 503 on my Firestar II, and do not have a fan...belt kept breaking..."one-less-thang". Temps are great, but front cylinder tends to run cooler at cruise. Avoid power-off dives and just ease down with a little power. One hot day at the airport I had to idle there waiting for a plane to move, and I was worried it might overheat...it didn't.

Thinking about sitting still and overheating at idle - Back in the day, all dirt bikes had 2 stroke engines, and we didn't just idle them, we stuck them in mud and slogged along at a slow walk & high power settings for minutes at a time. Never seemed to bother them. So unless you are turning a lot more than idle power, I wouldn't think sitting in line waiting for a few minutes would cause any serious problems.
