|
|
I am the owner of Firefly #58 which was a quick build by a Florida builder more than 10 yrs ago. I acquired the UL after some thief took the engine (prop too) and EIS unit. I am now in process of having a Hirth 2702 (and details) fitted by REC Power’s Matt Dandridge in Ohio.
In Nov 12 I took the airframe in a trailer to the Kolb Homecoming in London KY (It was there that I met John Hauck and John Gilpin along with Bryan Melborn and Travis and Greg Allison (of Eastern VA). At the Kolb factory I saw a Firefly frame hanging up and it had tundra tires installed. I took a photo (attached). My question is whether there is some feedback as to how these handle and availability: longitudinal axis of fuselage raised an inch or two or three by the increased tire diameter: reduced top speed : additional weight: whatever.
BTW, I am just learning to fly (now have about 25 hrs of conventional training in a Piper J4 (1939 vintage)) so I am not yet airborne.
I like Stanley Chitwood’s Firefly video (youtube) and I hope to take off and land from a grass strip I will construct on my farm.

I tried 800X6 tires on my original Firestar. Quickly
discovered the 15X6X6 lawn mower tires were all I needed to
do my kind of flying off field.
My main concern is to have enough floatation not to nose
over in soft sand and ground. end John Hauck
Today I saw some 13x5x6 tires on a lawn tractor and I see Nylon Rims and such tire/tube combos on Aircraft Spruce.
Seems like to me this could work on my Firefly: 15X6X6 2 ply with tube having width 5.9 in and height 14.8 in.
My reading seems to conclude that these fit on Azusa 6 in Nylon rims. Anyone tried something like this?
