Dear friends,
yesterday, I took my niece out for a ride in my CH 601 HDs with side tilting canopy. It was very hot yesterday afternoon and we had runway 08 in operation, which requires me to taxi all the way down the runway. In order no to sweat too much undernath the canopy I decided to skip the point "close canopy and engage canopy locks" in my checklist until we were ready to take off. You probably can guess: shortly after take off I realized, that the canopy hooks on the left side were not fully engaged and the canopy locks were not engaged. After some fideling I was able to engage the hooks and the locks - without my passenger even noticing, that something was wrong.
that was the last drop to push me to the decision: I wont to convert to the forward tilting canopy. Shouldn't be a big deal. Last Sun'n Fun I looked up the mechanism of the forward tilting canopy in detail. I have two questions, though:
- What type of gas springs are used (length, force)?
- Where can I get the locking mechanism and how exactly does the opening from the outside work?
Thanks

Thilo,
I saved the commercial data for the cylinder and it's a SUSPA, series
16-1, Part number C16-14864 144N
The 144 is the maximum Newtons force or 32.374-lbs. Tube diameter is
15mm, rod diameter is 6mm, thread for tube end is M6 x 1.0mm
and the thread rod end is M6 x 1.0mm. Lengths are minimum = 61 and
maximum is = 225.
Thilo, I also have a canopy pictorial page on my site and details
describing the effort to fabricate and install it on my journal Section
5, April 23 to May 17
Section 6, May 18 through June 7 and Sept 21 through Nov 26
Hope this helps.
