I have constant static on the Russian Radio. When receiving a transmission there is no static, but when listening on a frequency that is not transmitting
at the time it is constant, not from the intercom but the radio. I cannot find
a squelch adjustment on the intercom panel or on the radio itself.

Any ideas? Thanks for any help, it has been this way forever.

Did you try flipping the 2 position squelch switch on the radio head?

The two position switch only turns the radio on or off.

No, the bottom right switch is squelch, either off or on.

Your radio may different than mine. My YAK 52 radio has two freq. knobs, a volume control and a small silver vertical switch next to the volume control for squelch. Could your two position switch in fact be the squelch switch but only works with the squelch off. The normal position for my squelch switch is UP. Down position results in the un-squelched static you describe. Good Luck.

I forget which radio the 18T has. I think it is the Balkan 25. Would you let me know please? Is the radio a big silver box located in some rack in the aircraft someplace with a remote control head (as in the YAK-52), or do you have the single long box where the radio itself is right behind the control head?

If it is the one like is in the YAK-52, then find the radio itself and there will be two external adjustment rheostats that can be adjusted with a common screw driver. Take a magic marker and carefully mark the radio so as to show where they are presently adjusted to. This ... so that you can put them back to exactly where they are NOW after you mess with them.

One of these adjustments controls the transmit modulation level. The OTHER one controls the Squelch.

Of course you also have to have the squelch SWITCH turned to the proper position in the cockpit.

Turn each adjustment, one at a time fully CLOCKWISE. ONE of them will control the squelch. You have a 50 50 change of getting it right on the first try. If you pick the wrong one, put it back to exactly where it was before using the marks you put on there with your magic marker. The other one you want to adjust to where the noise JUST STOPS and then just a tiny bit more.

Good luck.

If neither one works..... you probably have a wiring problem.

Mark

p.s. If you have the radio that is "all in one", as in a control head that is attached to a long rectangular box that you slide out of a rack, with the antenna coax in the rear along with a DB-25 like connector, the squelch adjustment is INSIDE of the radio, and is not something I can describe over email. In those radios, you have to fire them up outside of the aircraft with the cover off and adjust the squelch. Not very easy to do. This radio is the same as is in the YAK-50, and a lot of Sukhoi models.

Mark- thanks for the help. The actual radio is a long black box on a shelf behind the hat rack and it does have the two adjustment screws you describe. They are both at about mid range and neither has any effect on the static but I'm going to try moving them with the fwd toggle switches in different positions.
We shall see.
