I've got a Garmin 396 and I'm hooking up my Trio. The
Trio calls for a "signal ground" and the Serial input.
My GPS only has an output but no signal ground.
Is a "signal ground" the same thing as an airframe
ground? The diagram has two types of grounds, but the
way it is drawn assumes the GPS has a ground and a
serial output.

Grounds (and grounding) can really be confusing. Sometimes, chassis
|
ground (or airframe ground) and signal ground are the same .......
internally to the device. However, some communications pairs are
floating above ground ...... and are usually designated OUT+ and OUT-
(or IN+ and IN- etc.) ...... or something showing some polarity.
That's not to say that out- isn't the same as GND, CHASSIS GROUND, or
SIGNAL GROUND.
Having said all that, if you only have one wire and it's labelled SERIAL
OUT, you can be assured that the airframe ground is the same as SIGNAL
GROUND.
It's the little subtle things like this that make wiring your own panel
something of a nightmare. I'd peruse the Aeroelectric web site and their
lists for electrical stuff.

Hi Paul,
In cases like the one below, just ignore it (the ground that is)...it'll
work just fine. Some GPS's run RS-232's in pairs with a ground along each
RS-232 signal, but most handhelds do not. If you're using one of our
plug/play harnesses there should only be one wire for the GPS...just hook
that one up. Just an FYI, but when hooking tranponders to EFIS's like
Dynon's and GRT's you'll likely see the same issue - and use the same
method.
Cheers,
Stein.
