Guys, I used an after market dessicant in Doug's in line air filter for the CJ6. The stuff turned to a solid & totally plug the filter. So, a word to the wise to use only Doug's recommended dessicant.

Here in the desert southwest, things are probably less humid than other locations, but I have used this in the air-water separator for my CJ for years with no problems.

I typically change it every six months.

One would think that the MIL Spec dessicant from AC Spruce should be OK.
However in the deyhdrator plug application (stored, non operating engine) it
would not be subject to any significant oil contamination.
Is oil contamination a factor?? I expect that most of the compressors on
our engines are worn enough to emit a fair amount of oil.
Paul, is this the product you were using?

Also of some interest is the fact that when I ordered the blue desiccant from the factory I was informed that the EPA has ordained that the blue stuff is not good for us anymore so they could not sell it to me. I guess Spruce never got the message (or has a bunch of old stock). Anyway, the current opinion by those who look out for us is that the orange (turns to grey/green) is safe for us to use, guess the blue stuff killed their rats. Just kinda makes you feel warm and fuzzy all over knowing that these folks are looking out for us.
I saw Paul's filter and it could not have been more "caked up" if you had poured it full of Plaster of Paris. The stuff was white and harder than a rock.
Best,
Doug

Walt, I use Castor oil as a lubricant per Doug's recommendation. Never had a problem before with the correct dessicant

Hi Paul;
I was referring to the possibility of contamination with engine oil which can happen with a high time compressor.
I contacted a desiccant company for advice. They indicated that Activated Alumina rather than Silica Gel was the best choice if oil vapors are present. The specs suggest that it has a better absorption rate than Silica Gel particularly with high subject air temperatures as we would have. However is not available as an indicating (color change) desiccant. Whether it can be dried and reused I have yet to determine.

The blue desiccant colour tracer is Cobalt Chloride which is a common allergen apparently and should be handled carefully, hence why it's being phased out to be replaced with various orange tracers. The Orange Green one is Methyl Violet I believe, which is considered safer.
Moreover Cobalt Chloride is a metal pitting agent (like all chlorides) that no doubt contributes to the aluminium alloy desiccant filter housing internal corrosion. So aside from toxicity moving away from Cobalt Chloride should help extend the life of your filter, either that or acquire one of Doug's stainless steel versions!

Rob,Thanks for that, I was not aware of the down side of the blue Cobalt Chloride desiccant. Good post.
Best,
