The only cap I know about that needs to be hooked up with correct polarity
is the electrolytic cap. They have an indentation, like a waist, or band,
near one end. Another thing to be aware of with these is that they 'age'.
They 'dry up' as they have a semi-liquid chemical inside. When I have an old
piece of equipment that goes belly-up I look for obvious things... burned
components, loose solder joints, and then I check the function of the
electrolytic caps. Problem is you have to take them loose at one end to
test, ie take them out of the circuit.
When using recycled parts I'd be sure to test these good, or maybe skip
using old ones. To me they are just trouble waiting to happen.
