ICOM A 24 handheld radio

Al while ago I bought the above radio. I took it with me religiously as a
back up on the basis that you can use it in flight and in the event of an
off airport landing it might be useful. Today my X air which as been
excellent up to now went intermittent.

I thought ok I will just fire up the ICOM. Well it didn't work or rather
not with a headset. Further research on the web suggests that despite
having a headset adapter in the box, there are problems getting it to work
with a headset. If you cant use a headset then the value as a backup is
questionable.

Has anyone had this issue?

I would welcome suggestions for handheld back up radios which do work with
headsets...

Thanks

Will

Sporty's SP 400 works great with the optional GA audio adapter supplied by Sporty's. If you don't want to key the mike on the unit you can also hook a mic switch in line with the headset audio. Works like a charm alongside the SP400 which is cradled with a RAM mount to the instrument panel. I had installed radio problems and the handheld really got me out of trouble a few times!

I use an Icom with a Lynx headset with a paramotor. The headset is especially made for this and works very well. But of course you would need to carry a spare headset.

My vertex 710 also works fine with my Lightspeed Zulu and a rubber ducky antenna, thought the range is limited. On the Vertex, the headset cord adapter is a rigid, rugged screw-in

Exactly what is the problem you are having? Is it the speakers, the mike, the PTT?

What was the company's response when you complained?

Ira
well i complained yesterday so i expect that it will take them a while.

I did some research on the web and apparently it has to do (as somebody mentioned) with the impedance of the mic.

I can hear fine.  Tx either produces whine or whistle and/or doesn't show as TX in the little window.  the signal is not received.

Without headset the radio works fine.

I am sending it to the representative here to see if they can work out what is wrong.  I will let you know the result.

yours
Will

Truth be told I've found the speaker on the Icom to be quite loud enough to use on just about any general aviation aircraft without a headset. It certainly is not ideal but it's one less thing to fiddle with in an abnormal situation. If all I intended to do was to re-enter the traffic pattern (circuit) and land its perfectly fine for that without a headset.

Generically speaking, an impedance mismatch of the microphone will cause the
a lower transmitted sound volume. That is because the mismatch will cause a lower voltage signal into the transmit input circuit.

A whine or squeal is usually the fault of a feedback loop. Could it be that the mike was too close to the headset speaker when you were testing it?
