Looking for some real life experience of Barrett's high compression pistons.
We are getting our M14p overhauled this winter and are trying to decide between standard and high compression pistons supplied by Barrett.
Whilst the extra 20hp offered is attractive, I am concerned that fuel flow will increase as well: reduced range is not very attractive in a Yak 50 with already "short legs".
Has anyone out there got, say, a year or more under their belt with the high comp pistons that can give us some feedback on comparative fuel flows as power output and oil consumption?

I have experience with three M-14's running these pistons. Two M-14P models, and one M-14PF. The pistons offer other benefits besides higher compression (and it is not much of an increase) mainly much better piston rings with a closer tolerance and as a result much lower oil consumption and less leakage past the rings into the lower cylinders when the engine is not running. This also means a much lower tendency for spark plug fouling among other things.
While it is true that if you UTILIZE that extra power you are going to see increased fuel flow (you never get something for nothing), it is also true that you have a throttle and a RPM control that adjusted properly will give you the same fuel flow as you had before.
Oil consumption has been MUCH lower on every one of the engines I have dealt with that have been modified with these pistons and rings.
That said, the folks that run these engine that I deal with don't normally keep track of fuel consumption to speak of, so I can't really answer that question. That said, when it comes time to rebuild my engine, there is no question that I will do this mod. The Russian piston rings have a very high expansion rate with temperature, and thus are really sloppy loose when cold. There is no question that Western piston & ring design is far more advanced than what came from the factory, especially with the gap-less rings that Barrett uses.
