Has anyone been able to use the Chinese B-Nuts on Flexible hose like Aeroquip 666? I'd like to know what mandrels, etc I would need to make this work.

Use Aeroquip 303 hose with AN491-x fitting. Throw away the AN nut from the 491-x and use the metric B-nut on the 491-x fitting. Use the appropriate size mandril for the 491-x fitting available from Spruce if you don't already have them.

Dennis,

Do you think that a 303-3 hose would be sufficient for our air system?
What I'd like to do is use hose pig tails off of things like the flap valve where it is located in tight spots. The 666 hose would have fit the bill nicely, but the nuts can't be replaced. I'm concerned that the 303 hose is a bit bulky.

I use Aeroquip 303-4 hoses and AN491-4 fittings. The metric B nut fits very nicely in place of the AN B nut on the 491-4 fitting.
The 303 hose works very well. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.

Dennis,
I have looked all over (including ACS) and have never found any assembly mandrels that have metric threads allowing you to thread on the metric B-nut and then thread that into the hose.
I guess I don't understand why you would even buy a AN 491-X fitting if you were going to use the metric B-nut. I just made my own assembly mandrel with an appropriate size metric bolt on a lathe.
What am I missing here?

The mandrels for the 491-x fittings have absolutely nothing to do with the B nuts. The mandrel is used to assist in fitting the barrel into the hose. The B nuts that come in the package with the 491-x fittings are loose B nuts that slide over the barrel of the fitting. If you look closely at the fitting, you will see that the B nut is loose. You simply slide the AN B nut off the barrel and replace it with the metric B nut. Enlarge the photo in the link and you will see the B nut is loose on the barrel.

I have made dozens of these hoses using the Aeroquip 491-4 and -5 fittings with the appropriate size Aeroquip 303-4 and -5 hose and appropriate mandrel.

The -3 size hose and fitting is too small. You need the -4 size hose and fitting. The barrel of the 491-4 fitting mates with the metric B nut very nicely. The barrel of the -3 fitting is too small and will probably slide right out of the hole in the metric nut.

Dennis do you know of anyone that has the 29+ hoses for the Yak 52 on a shelve? and when you replace the AN B-nut with Yak B-nut how do you compensate for the matting surface angle? I believe its 69 degrees. Dennis do you feel there would be a market for hoses if someone were to sell a complete set for the Yak and CJ and had them on a shelve ready to go?
Most will say 29 hoses? yup start counting the hoses hooked up to your landing gear that you never see

Do it your self hoses are on the surface easy to construct, however great caution should be taken to check the "flow" of the newly constructed hose IN BOTH DIRECTIONS. "Flappers" in the new hose can ruin your whole day. If you insist in doing this type of work yourself, please ask for help the first time out as it will save you a lot of grief in the long run.

Hi Dennis;
I think you may have missed Bill’s point here. If you are assembling an Aeroquip 303 (Parker 111) hose assy. with the 491 fitting MODIFIED by replacing the AN “B” nut with a metric “B” nut you will not be able to use the standard mandrel as the threads will not mate.

PS: Over the years I have replaced (or attempted to replace!) every hose used on the CJ with the MIL-H-8794 standard ( Aeroquip 303 / Stratoflex 111). Each size presents different challenges and different methods of accomplishment. I have not commented on this subject up to now since I would need to review my experience with the –4 size. Suffice to say that Doug’s caution is very appropriate and there are numerous other factors that must be considered.

The mandrels for the 491-x fittings have absolutely nothing to do with the B nuts. The mandrel is used to assist in fitting the barrel into the hose. The B nuts that come in the package with the 491-x fittings are loose B nuts that slide over the barrel of the fitting. If you look closely at the fitting, you will see that the B nut is loose. You simply slide the AN B nut off the barrel and replace it with the metric B nut. Enlarge the photo in the link and you will see the B nut is loose on the barrel.

I have made dozens of these hoses using the Aeroquip 491-4 and -5 fittings with the appropriate size Aeroquip 303-4 and -5 hose and appropriate mandrel.

I guess I don't understand why you would even buy a AN 491-X fitting if you were going to use the metric B-nut. I just made my own assembly mandrel with an appropriate size metric bolt on a lathe.
What am I missing here?

I went to a hose place and had them find a straight steel fitting in the proper metric size for the Chinese hose end. I then inserted a drill bit shank through the center hole snug (tried different long drill bits until one fit snugly) with the smooth part exiting out the flare. Then I welded the bit to the fitting on the pipe thread inlet side (i.e. the "other side" opposite the flare). I smoothed the end of the extended bit to a rounded point for inserting into the new hose. Woola. I had a mandrel for the metric nut with the proper flare that would insert into the 303 hose. I will post a picture of it after I get out to the hangar.

Hi Dennis, et al;

Did some research to refresh my memory on the CJ air system hose & fittings, etc. Hard to believe but it was 20 years ago (1994) when there was no new Chinese hose available.

The above hose & fittings are identified as a size 4. The rationale for that number is the ID of the hose and the ID of the standard al. alloy tubing (6 mm X 1 mm) used in the system. Both are 4 mm.
The AN/MS designation of dash (-) 4 might suggest that these are of the same size and in fact the ID’s of hose and tubing are indeed similar to the above. In this case the – 4 represents the OD of the standard al. alloy tubing in 1/16th increments.
There the similarity ends.

The Chinese hose is designed for an operating press. to 750 psi. and likely will approach 1500 before failure. To achieve this without a steel mesh requires a number of fabric layers and a much larger outer diameter.
The MIL-H-8794-4 (303-4/ 111-4) is designed principally for medium press. hydraulics to 1500 psi. with an ultimate in excess of 3000 psi. These numbers of course decreasing with increasing diameter.

Due to the much larger OD and the corresponding larger size of the fitting components, replacing the AN nut with the metric nut will result in a structurally unsafe assembly. The axial load produced by the internal pressure is reacted at the bearing area of the nut on the nipple. This is a circular contact surface with an outer dia. of approx. 3/8” and a width of approx. 1/16”+ in the original configuration. That width is reduced to 0.016” (1/64”) with the metric nut on the AN nipple. I have not calculated the actual area reduction but it is severe and unacceptable.

So much for the AN –4 size.

On the other hand the 303-5/111-5 I believe can be quite safely used as a replacement hose but only using the complete Chinese fitting assembly and only if the socket and nipple of that assembly are of the later design as shown in the attached photo. In this configuration with the slightly smaller OD nipple (8 mm compared to approx. 9 mm for the AN nipple) the 3000 psi minimum may be compromised a bit.

In the bad old days the hoses always leaked from the socket area after they had some time on them. The reason was the 7 mm nipple was just too small. The Chinese tried to fix that by wrapping the nipple with fabric before screwing it in.

So the –5 will work - with the Chinese fitting! It could be done with the metric nut on the AN nipple BUT that requires increasing the hole dia. in the nut and decreasing the OD of the nipple head resulting in the same problem as the –4 size though not quite as bad. Not a good idea and why bother! New hoses are available at a fraction of the price of the AN/MS stuff and are more than adequate for the rather minimal pressure they are subject to.

I don’t know when the “new’ nipple arrived, maybe back in the seventies (Doug?) They are a huge improvement and are probably on all the new stock hoses. I think they are on mine - all new from Doug and haven’t leaked YET???
