If you like the idea of the Horizon tach, but don't like the price (it is TSOed) or the fact that it only fits a 3 1/8 hole....the new tach from Flight Data Systems might be your answer.
http://www.fdatasystems.com/T_30.htm
I contacted the company and asked if it would work on a 9-cyl radial. They have a person with a Wilga testing it now and he told me they are committed to making a model that will work for radials.
At $169, this is a nice replacement for the tachs in our planes and it fits the existing hole.

Thanks for that post Craig.
I really like their G-meter (thanks again!) the display is large and really easy to read. The tach looks like a great deal.

Craig and all,I am a dealer for these FD data (EI) tach's and also the FT-60 fuel flows. Savings is not big as they only give a dealer a 10% break. I am about to order three of them let me know if you have an interest. For those of us who cannot afford a JPI system they are far less expensive, very light weight, and seem to work well.

What's the g meter price from you. I would like 2 g meters and 1 tach maybe 2 if they will work together.

As these tachs are driven by the p-lead (not by a signal from our tach gens), I see no reason why you'd have a problem with two (one front, one back). Use shielded wire and make sure you have shield continuity with the p-lead shield and keep any exposure of the unshielded wire (when making connections) as short as possible. The p-lead signal is full of high frequency components which will cause noise unless shielded.
Also, note the company spokesperson I talked to said one was in TEST on a Wilga (M-14P, or as he said...."one of those Russian engines."). He was not sure if the current model will work with a radial. He did say the company was committed to making a model that would work for radials.
It is usually a programming issue to resolve the number of pulses per revolution. Most manufacturers only plan on engines with an even number of cylinders (how dare they!).

Guys,Update to those of you waiting for, or are interested in the new FD digital tachs or g meters-----The new digital tachs are actually not quite ready to ship yet per Chuck at FD, the tech guys are doing a software modification to allow the digital tach to be used with the 9 cly radial engine. He guessed that he could ship in 2-3 weeks. There were also questions as to rather these tachs could be installed in both cockpits, Chuck indicated that he could see no reason why this could not be done.
I have the first shipping position on the first 6 tachs off the line.
Yesterday I ordered the last 4 of the G meters they had in stock, thought that best to grab this stock as another production run is not scheduled for 6 weeks. Those 4 units should arrive here in about a week.

As of 28 October 2009
We have tested and confirmed that two T-30 Tachometers can be driven
simultaneously from a single magneto. This will allow installation of
a second tachometer in the rear instrument panel if desired. We have
also completed the software upgrade to allow a user setting for 9
cylinder engines.
We will have production units available to ship next week.
Thanks for your patience,

Hi all,
I've been using these T-30 tacs for the last several months. The ones I have I bought three years ago and they have worked perfectly. I have them wired together off the p-lead from the back of the mag switch. Make sure you wire in the included resistore between the mag switch and the gage.
As far as I can tell they only read RPM and not percentage.
