I am getting ready to make up the wiring harnes for my new Trig radio and
transponder and see that they use MIL -C-24308 connectors with M39029/63-368
crimped pins. The recommendation is to use the DMC AFM8 crimping tool, which
seems expensive. Has anyone used a more modest crimping tool with success?

Steve, When recently replacing my Garmin SL30 with the 8.33 version, it called for a crimping tool costing around £600 to crimp the ? High density mini pins. I borrowed Rowland's £30 version and took some trial bits along to RGV. They showed me how the wire easily pulled out of the cheap crimping but not from their expensive one, so it was worth using the expensive one. They very kindly lent me their spare one but it could very well be that your nearest avionics set up would at least do you a set of crimps on likely lengths of wire.
Regards, David

I’ve got a crimper that appears identical. I got mine from Stein Air in USA <http://www.steinair.com/storedetail.cfm?productid=291>; I don’t think LAS stocked it at that time. Stein Air also stock the more expensive one <http://www.steinair.com/storedetail.cfm?productid=300> that needs positioners for each type of contact; it will also do the high-density contacts that the cheaper tool above will not.

Opinions vary! I’ve found mine satisfactory for standard D-submin contacts, and I always give the wires a pull after crimping to assure security. I used it on my Trig transponder connectors. Tim Houlihan (who has mine on loan at present) is also satisfied with its performance. However, (Dr) David Joyce borrowed mine a while back and reported that the crimps he made with it did not pass the pull test, so he borrowed a much more expensive tool from a professional wiring shop and was much happier with the results.

I also just fitted a pair of Trigs to my Europa; I bought them from AirworldUK, and they supplied pre-wired harnesses FOC. They were very nicely made and properly screened where required, all in tefzel cable.

I know anothers who bought the harnesses from them separately for a modest cost (under £100 for both). If the tool costs more than this, it may be worth a phonecall?

Gentlemen,
Thank you for all your replies and I had looked at Stein Air and their
cheaper crimper as several You Tube clips said they were as good at our end
of the market as the more expensive.
If Tim has finished with Rowland's by our Committee meeting could I borrow
them please Rowland?
Regards
Steve

The cheap SteinAir crimper (http://www.steinair.com/storedetail.cfm?productid=291) is excellent. If you need to crimp high density pins, you need the high density positioner (http://www.steinair.com/storedetail.cfm?productid=538).

I've recently been installing a Garmin GTX328 transponder along with a GNS480 using these tools and very happy with the result.

LAS is not selling the high density positioner and the Garmin devices are extensively using high density pins.
