I am concerned when I read people referring to "the 52 POH". Quite simply, the 52 is an ex-military aircraft and no such document in a Western sense exists. I have six different versions of a 52 flight manual, three of which make absolutely no mention of any issues about spinning. So, it goes back to the fundamental advice of getting proper instruction from someone genuinely experienced on the type!

Richard, As you well know, the Yak-52 is NOT an ex-military aircraft. It was designed for civilian air clubs for sport flying. Some were later used as trainers for the military. There exists official training manuals for the aircraft in Russian and translated to English. That said, I could not agree more about your point about spin training.

George – to an extent you are right, but only a small one! This is an issue that we in Europe have had lawyers going into great detail. We can only fly the 52 in most European countries on the basis that it is ex-military, and we were able to get agreement to the fact that Russian DOSAAF, which was the operator of the aircraft was the sport flying side of the Russian Air Force – quite simply there were no "civilian air clubs" of the sort that we understand in the West.
The more important point I was making is that I have one flight manual from Aerostar as the manufacturer; I have another from Yakovlev; I have two different ones from DOSAAF, and two others as well, so firstly they must be confusion as to which is the official one, and by implication, the correct one but, critically, three of these suggest that the 52 spinning characteristics are totally benign.
But we are at one on the issue of proper spin training, which, in my view, too many people do not obtain.

So that sounds like a good place to close the spinning issue. Let me some it up; If you haven’t spun your yak, don’t. Unless you go somewhere for instruction. And leave your computer at home.

How do you rate the POH sold by Mark Jefferies on his site YAK UK Ltd?
English translation from the Russian DOSAAF 1987 version.
And the one from Steve Culp "Yak 52 Training School & Maintenance Flight Manual Service Aerobatic" ?
This is a compilation of translated manuals and diagrams, etc.

I have read it - after a European fatal 52 spinning accident, I obtained all
flight manuals/POHs that I could get, and was surprised by the many areas of
difference, some significant. Of course I was specifically looking at
spinning issues, and the differences were noticeable.

Hmmm...been 10 years since I intentionally spun one but recognized impending entry and recovered without devoting a full spin a number of times.
Now saying that if you have never experienced spins in the YAK do not go there until you have. When you do remember it takes roughly 1000 feet to recover. Beats the 6 -10 K for the Viper. Altitude is your practice friend.

One would even more carefully add that only fools would try it themselves EVEN from a very high height.
That’s because you’ll NOT recover AT ALL (irrespective of your starting height) unless you KNOW and APPLY and HOLD the FULL CORRECT Yak52 recovery action….

To all who care to read the detail. If not skip to the last paragraph.
I will try to upload cockpit video of upright spins to You Tube
I also have some crappy video of inverted spins. I will post that to.

It took me a while to find the videos and edit them.
Here is a link to Sergei teaching spins. My first try at them in 2005 when he came to the yak event at Manitowoc.
http://youtu.be/1E6aM6n-9Xo
You can hear the coaching and the steps.
Idle - Stick back middle, no aileron - right rudder, then plan spins.
Then opposite rudder - stick neutral - plane recovers.
You will see my mistakes, but within 3-4 tries he’s not yelling at me.
Point is to show steps, actually how the plane responds and ….
The value of good instruction in the back seat.
I flew with him almost every year in the summer for 6 years. We added every year to skills, and improvement on old skills.
Then in 2011 I wanted to lean to tumble. We had to lean inverted spins, b/c if controls held in tumble, the result is an inverted spin.
Here is the video of the inverted spin training. Sorry not in color and it was hazy with rain in the area out of OSH.
http://youtu.be/7e9ntmvQPq4
Enjoy and fly safe.

Very interesting. What I found interesting that you had difficulty in reaching all the way to the front (with the stick)
So iow, you should tighten the straps just enough to still have full control of the stick right into each far "corner".
....and no loose objects...

Yes. I was strapped tight. Knowing tumbles were on the list for the day.
I have done much more since then. Including in a 55. Figured out that lap belt (ratcheting in the 55) holds you in the seat. Shoulder straps keep your face off the panel in rapid deceleration. I fly with them more loose now and can reach corners no problem. And can turn more to check six.

Nice Video Herb shows how responsive and predictable the Yak 52 is in a normal-standard spin upright and inverted. Has anyone made a similar video showing the flat spin with two cameras one out the window showing the Yak 52 with its nose on the horizon spinning round and round the other camera on the controls showing how useless the controls are in the flat spin then showing correct flat spin recovery and how LONG it takes to recover? Although a video of the flat spin would be nice it REALY needs to be experienced!!! One so you don't let the spin develop and two if it does at low altitude to get your ass out of the airplane NOW.

In my opinion this is, behind Nigel's comment about being a fool 'trying' spins by yourself, perhaps the most salient comment of this entire discussion over the last couple of weeks. Good on you, Herb, for getting real spin training...which does not happen in one flight or one day. It takes several hours to become proficient (read "truly safe") in spin recoveries and becoming truly spin proficient in all recoveries from all spin types is a commitment that, while certainly prudent and recommended, is a step far too few take.
Tumble on, Herb!
Make every flight a training flight!
Happy Flying and Happy Thanksgiving,
Barry
