Hello all. I would like to make an access panel in the stern post in case I need to remove the long control shaft and also to make it easier for access into the tail end For maintance. My inspector is a bit dubious about cutting into the post but I said to him that I got the idea after seeing that G-IANI has a vent from the D panel to the stern post. So my question is, is there a mod for this install on G-IANI?

I'm not aware of a mod ever being requested for this.

If you are building a mono wheel with a tail spring, then this might not 

be a great idea as the stern post will carry some of the weight of the 

aircraft on the ground.

If on the other hand you are building a tri-gear, then would think that 

the stern post will not be subjected to any great loads that low down, 

so it shouldn't be a problem. G-IANI is a tri-gear.

Hi Nigel,

Why would you worry about the sternpost carrying some of the load? The way it is reduxed in, well I would think it should make no difference as it is such a strong member. I for example am building a Classic, but have incorporated a sternpost. My tail spring sits quite tightly in the sternpost, and mine is a mono wheel, actually a taildragger. I’d like to know if anyone else sees this as an issue?

P.S. I have thought of reinforcing the tail area nevertheless, as that hole for access is a “big” one.

Thanks for the reply Nigel. I am building a mono, classic. With the tail spring bonded to the stern post I can see how some load would be transferred into the post, however unlike the tri gear vent photo I am putting back what Iv removed which must strengthen in back up a bit?

My mono, classic with the XS Tailwheel spring, has now got over 2,100 hours on it over the last 17 years and I have never found the need for any other access for maintenance than is afforded by the standard access panel under the tailplane which I used to install the Tailwheel spring when it first came out.

Hi Tony,

My first post wasn't very well worded. The stern post is, as you say, 

immensely strong and shouldn't give cause for worry.

My concern is for the proximity of a large diameter hole so close to the 

tailwheel spring mounting point. The tailwheel loads on a mono will be 

dissipated upwards through the sternpost. By placing the inspection hole 

immediately above it in the load path, there is a possibility of failure 

should the aircraft experience a ground loop or particularly heavy 

tail-down landing. The farther away this hole is placed from the spring, 

and the smaller the diameter of the hole, the less likelihood of a 

problem. The position is of course, dictated by the alignment of the 

pitch push-rod (as per O.P.'s post). The trig-gear does not have this 

problem as it has no tail spring.
