Wondered if anyone who has implemented this MOD on the classic tunnel had any photos showing the cutouts they made. Along the lines of measure thrice, mark out twice and cut once - my intentions attached - comments welcome

Hi Clive,

I did the 'LA' mod (although I don't have a LA myself I hasten to add)
on my Europa Classic fuselage following the instructions provided by
Europa using foam block carved to the desired shape, glass, removed foam
block and glass the other side.

It was pretty straightforward and easy to do. See attached photo before
I covered it.

Thanks Martin, I was interested to see if both sides were tackled and how the brake cylinder were handled. Could you send me a larger image directly? My email is clive.maf(at)googlemail.com

Hi Clive,

I did this mod almost 20 years ago and I don't have any photos. Of course the recesses in my tunnel sides are now covered with dark fabric and don't show well in a photo.

Only two points to make. I don't think it's necessary to cut recesses into the tunnel which remove the top edges of the tunnel. My recesses look similar to your proposals, but stop about an inch below the top edges, thereby retaining that extra bit of tunnel strength. This doesn't compromise the increased comfort afforded to your hips.

Having completed the concave recesses in the foam and done the lay-ups in the hollows, while progressively rubbing away blue foam on the other side I would determine the depth of foam still needing to be removed by occasionally pushing a thin needle through the foam until it touched the concave layup and thus served as a depth gauge.

Hi Martin. I too am building a classic and have thought about this mod. I have put it off until I have put in place the under carriage and brake lever to get an idea of what space will be left inside the tunnel and also how close you will be to the wheel. If you could send be some photos of your tunnel too that would be great. Also did you make up a temple to get both side the same? My email is spcialeffects(at)aol.com. Many thanks Frank

Hi Clive,

Unfortunately y Europa was built before the proliferation of digital
cameras and the photo I sent you was scanned from a print taken from a
35mm camera.

You are right though, I had to think about the brake cylinder, but as
you can see I made a small bullet type fairing shape using the same foam
block and glass method used for the tunnel sides. Otherwise both sides
were the same.

Regards,
Martin
