Need some help not reinventing the wheel: For whatever reason, my 582 had a tendency to run hot in the summer, so I added a skinny little dirt bike radiator to the system and everything was cool. (literally)
But it always had a tendency to run too cool in the winter, and now it is worse. An easy fix would be some shutters to block and unblock the main radiator, cockpit operated.
Anybody done that?

It shouldn't be all that hard. I have been using Duct tape to get mine in the close range. One strip or two, but it is a bit less than satisfactory. I am thinking a variation of the Venetian blind controlled by a push pull throttle type cable. My only problem is I am 130 miles from a metal supply.
The question is would you be better off with it in the wind stream in front of the radiator, or behind it to stop the wind flow?

I had radiator louvers/shutters on my 582 PPC. They worked pretty good. On my second 582 I just used black duct tape to block half the radiator during the winter. I honestly think the duct tape is more simple and less results in less that could fly into the prop if it got loose.

in the winter I keep a small roll of the aluminum duct tape in the belly of
the plane... and for all intent and purpose,,,, I lick a finger and stick
it in the wind... the more glove I wish I had on the finger is the amount
of tape I put on the radiators..... LOL seems I can get quite close.
my winter time flying has greatly diminished compared to the first couple of
years I had the mark iii.... it seems the radiator needs 25 percent
coverage and the oil cooler 100 percent. and when it is below 20 deg....
I have to tape up both the front and back of the oil cooler if I want to
keep the oil temps in the green.

It's made to fit an 'aircraft' style oil cooler (John H: note the
quotes), so I don't know if it will directly fit your cooler.
You could get the same effect with less summertime obstruction by
building a short rectangular duct to fit the heat exchanger and mount a
'butterfly' style valve that fits in the duct. Control with a Bowden cable.

Richard,
I used a radiator shutter with the Victor 1. It is quite simple with most
of the mechanism purchased as a child's automobile window shutter from Toy
or Us(?).
I am slowly resurrecting my web site and when I saw your email, I made sure
all the info on the shutter is available.
Use this jump:
http://www.jackbhart.com/firefly/fireflyindex.html to get to my web site.
Then go to Victor 1+ and look at the last 8 on the list.

Brilliant! Will the shade open & close ok while in flight?

Do you have dimensions on the truck heater core? If possible, I'd like
to know the dimensions (H/W/thickness) of just the core, and the overall
dimensions. Also, what was the original size of the inlet/outlet
fittings? (I tried to find Partsamerica.com, but the website is
apparently dead.)
Thanks,
Charlie

Richard,
I am sending this again because I missed a jump. It describes how to modify
the Graco window shade. A direct jump is:

Thanks guys for all the help, now I've got some ideas that may just work.
Jack; good to see you keeping your web site alive, you have a great ability to think outside the box, you are a true experimenter. My web site is going away in February, and I'm not sure if I want to try and start a new web site, or just let it go.

Charlie,
Yes, one can adjust the shade in flight.
The heater core was used in a 1994 Ford Ranger pickup.
Core is 1.5 in thick, 7 in tall, & 5.5 in wide.
5/8 in diameter tubes.
Partsamerica.com is gone. Carparts.com has them for less than $30.

Charlie,
Thought to check and Autozone has them for $25.
